All being well!
I have now been sworn in as stipendiary incumbent of Quagmire ... and would you believe that there are builders in that house as well? It no longer meets the diocesan standards so I am going to have to commute for the time being - the very thing that the bishop did not want - but no-one can withstand the primal force of nature that is the Diocesan Housing Department.

Nine Km. on a fairly good road and there are very few wolves in the forest along the way ...

*is thinking of Asterix and Obelix now* Any Romans to beat up? The Romans never got to Mordor (the Ghondorheans were in the way, sadly) so Asterix is not well understood here. Have you noticed by the way that this thread is very close to reaching its 1000 post target?

No, I had not. My pupils love reading Asterix and Obelix. I received a few comics in English from a former teacher.

I was quite surprised the other day when I went into a shop and saw a new Asterix book on the shelf.

Has a new author taken over the series - or is a discovery among the papers of the old author?

Rippingly good performance by the Chapel Choir at the University Carol Service this evening: there may only be twelve of us but we filled the cathedral with our sound. Thrilling.

We actually made more noise than the limitless hoards of the Gospel Choir - for all their clever choreography ...

Thing is with gospel choirs and lots of pop choirs: in general they sing enthusiastically and try to go as loud as possible (I don't know why people think belting is required when singing), but they haven't learned how to properly use and control their voice. It's not hard to "out sing" them.

Very true, the uniGC have been taught to sing very high in the larynx and depend on head voice for volume - but the real power lies down in the diaphragm. Their two soloists had nicely tuned voices but were microphone dependent. It was also a very odd arrangement of Silent Night that they did not really seem to enjoy. Chapel Choir, in the other hand had a spanking piece of 15th century noel, a proper dance song and really percussive, the sort of music that makes it hard not to rise to the occasion! Here's a vveerryy sssssllllllllloooooooowwww perfomance of it www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMYyN9Uh9wY we were at least a third faster and much more jolly altogether ... plus we were dressed sensibly ...

Yippee - the house (not in the parish house, I mean) has got a back door again. All the serious building work is done now with the roof finished and the glass lantern installed. There is only the plastering to do and the decorative trades can get stuck in.

I am forlorn. My workshop is still full of furniture and I cannot get near the bench to have some hobby time. Mind you with the parish work and the editing frenzy on the thesis there is not a lot of time for scale engineering in any case.
