If you leave aside one or two old phones that I had the occasional use of but which did not belong to me, the first mobile I owned that was totally mine was a trium something or other which I bought about ten or eleven years ago. It was incredibly basic but it cost fifty quid ... you can get a better one for a pound now. It was on virgin network and texts were ten or twelve pee each and calls up to 35 pee a minute. Nonetheless I loved it and used it for years and was pretty gutted when the charger died so it was effectively unusable from them (this was before standardised chargers so it was a fiddly one that I'd never have found a replacement for ..)

My first real mobile is the one I've got now, a £50 Motorola Razr. I've had it for about eight years. Before that I had a Nokia phone that my old company gave me. I can't remember anything about it except that it allowed me to make phone calls and send text messages.

A Nokia, maybe a model 2110(?), in 1996. I remember because I bought it for my birthday with my first wages from the store I bought it from. Most of my phones since then have been work phones or gifts.
My current phone is barely used as a phone any more, what with all the apps, chats, emails, music, videos and maps.

I'm not sure anymore, I just remember I loved it and thought it was the easiest to use. Maybe it was a Phillips - did they make mobiles back then? It was something that isn't around now. I think it was Phillips.

Mine was an Alcatel phone in 1999... I still have the same number! Terrible ringtones, ABC texting, only space for 20 messages. At the time', the only reason I replaced it was because the battery pack died and it was prohibitive to replace.

I actually also have the same number still. 18 years now.

Of course, I hated the phone above being white, but they didn't do a black one... so I took it apart and lacquered it!

I did have a pink phone for a while after Tracy died; it was very shiny, too.
For various reasons I had four phones at one point, which was just silly.

Did you send text messages from one to the other?

No, but now I've started to play with Android I have been writing programs and testing them that way.

I got one a lot later than my classmates, some of whom had one when they were only 9 ! As a 12 year old I was perfectly happy with my brick Nokia, as all I used it for was keeping in contact with my parents

It was a Nokia ... not sure if it was a 2210 or 2110 or 1810 or what. A brick, anyway, in the days when they still had stubby little aerials.

Someone at university had one in about 1992. It was like a field phone! It went off in a lecture one day and the tutor got really angry about how rude it was to be interrupted. I dread to think what he thinks these days!

I also had an Alcatel, a bit like the one Colin posted a picture of. I just had it for emergencies back then and I guess technically, it wasn't really mine, but my parents', but I was allowed to use it. When I moved out, I was allowed to take it with me, so I guess that made it mine. I managed to swap it for a Samsung (I think) when I visited my parents which looked a little bit like this one.

Well, I always hated cellphones (or any kind of phone or device solely for communication for that matter), so I resisted taking one till I was 18 or 19.

I couldn't find an image of one with a hand for scale. But it was big. ASDA Tech Trade-in - Nokia 2210 say "WE'LL PAY YOU £0.00 for your Working Nokia 2210"

With the advent of mobile phones came people with extremely loud voices, I seem to remember. Not so much these days.

Some are still quite loud. My friend always talks quite loudly on the phone.

Welcome Alin!
Those early ones were great, and I bet a lot of them still work, given the chance.

I expect my first mobile would still work if the battery hadn't died and the replacement cost almost as much as a new phone.

I had a Debitel, the size of a refrigerator. I got it at 17 or perhaps even 18. I'm on my 4th phone by now, but loved my 3rd best. Unfortunately the batteries gave out and replacing the battery is simply more expensive than getting a new phone. I still use my phone only for calling and the occasional texting.

Actually, I often forget that I even have one, though I know the number by heart as opposed to the number of my landline.

I would feel naked without my phone these days. Though it is hardly ever used as a 'phone'.
