I think you just stuffed it up now Col.
Not my daily lesson tangent as they only have a pod cast once a week. Blame Miisa for introducing me. The guys are lovely and funny thought. Ex mormons.

My goodness you chaps have been quick that's a whole century in a day or so ... sadly we need to hit a thousand a day to finish the countdown in a reasonable time (less than ten years) but that is not a reason to ease off the postification!

I don't know what we'll be having but I'm sure it will be good because they always have such delicious food at the restuarant we are going to. Nom nom nom.
I am debating whether it is wise to wear a skirt since I just checked the weather and notice it has dropped down to just 22 C - will that be warm enough?

956 880 I can't post much now as I'm listening to Thank God I'm Atheist and I can't listen properly when posting. *Realizes it's the weekend and promptly goes to download latest episode* It is one of the few atheist podcasts I would actually even suggest to a theist.

Why would you recommend it to a theist? Would you recommend it to the Archbishop of Cantebury?

If it's interesting, thought-provoking, and not bathed in a sense of smug superiority I'd like to listen.

The way I would recommend any podcast I enjoy listening to, I just think this one is at the least abrasive end of the "activist atheist" scale. Mostly. I don't know the archbishop's liking of humour, banter and current religious news, but quite probably, yes.

956 876 I guess I mean the idea that all theists are really stupid and if they were just smarter, they'd realize this whole god thing is silly, just like we do. I would call that smug superiority.

Most atheist activists are former theist themselves*, so they have been on the other side and know what it's like. Some have not been religious previously, such as the famously horrid-to-theists-and-general-agent-provocateur Dave Silverman (president of American Atheists), and many think he gives us all a really bad image.
*And a remarkable percentage seem to be formons, or Former Mormons.

956 873 There are some sorry and narrow minded people in the world, theists and atheists alike. But not here, usually.

I don't think I know any nasty theists personally, although sadly quite a few who are overeager (evangelical) or dismissive of atheism even being possible. Especially among Afrikaaners. I do know some rather abrasive atheists.

956 871 I started writing this several posts back... The thing that really grates with me is when things get to the point where people take an "I am right, you can't possibly be right" attitude. It is all about belief, faith and conviction, not absolute facts. As far as I am concerned, someone who says there is no God has as much proof as someone who says there is; it still doesn't make either of them right or wrong and they are entitled to their opinion. I am fine with debate and conviction either way, but bloody-mindedness is not good either way. I think there is a very significant difference to be made between atheism and anti-theism.

The problem is often that a lot of activist atheists are recent deconversions, still very much hurting from their past and what they have just gone through, and feel a lot of resentment about their respective former religions and how they were raised with them, which can in some cases make them come off as anti-theist. The atheist version of "born agains", I suppose. Once they get past that hurting phase they tend to calm down more and are less activist, so we don't hear from them so much any more.

I imagine that applies to the States but is unlikely to occur very often in Europe.

956 869 A bit like people who have stopped smoking? On a totally unrelated note, I was trying to watch Inglorious Basterds, but forgot to encode the subtitles from the DVD, forgetting how much dear old Quentin loves to record half the film in various other languages! Will have to do it again. Did the same with Kill Bill!

Less with mainstream, state (or state-like) religions, but with a lot of the smaller or more fervent sects it happens quite a bit.
