Alright I know it's a bit of a cliche but I do have a sneaking liking for Subway. I like the fact that for one thing they don't overload their sandwiches with butter - I don't care much for butter in sandwiches - and I like also the choice of different veg and condiments. Also, it's nice to actually have something made fresh in front of you as opposed to supermarket prepackaged sandwiches which are often stale and frankly unappetising. That said, subway is not cheap so I don't tend to go there more than maybe once every six weeks or so.
There's a local sandwich chain called La Venue that i am very fond of too .. they do a really nice chicken tikka or mexican chicken (also cheese or tuna savoury). Hmm now I want a sandwich.

I think we only have Subway. I used to like their sandwiches, but haven't had one in a while.

I find Subway quite affordable, compared to other fast food.
I find the having to make so many choices and them seemingly constantly demanding new information from you quite tiring, though. And I never seem entirely happy with what I got, as I just don't know what I might like.

They used to do a sub of the day which made it easier .. I'd just get whatever was cheapest and if it was not something i happened to fancy I'd not bother. Now they don't do that so if I do happen to go there I have to choose. To be honest what really makes it for me though is the extremely good salad so it's less relevant what the main filling is.

Sub of the day helps me only in that the meat they put in is cheaper. I still have to pick every little detail of the sandwich still.

It was a very confusing experience, but we liked the food. It was when my sister and I went from Callaly to Vernon on a Greyhound bus by ourselves. We had a great time.

I usually get the Italian BMT with provolone and all of the veggies (except for pickles and jalapenos), mayo, and vinegar. But yesterday they had Reubens, so I got one of those. It was pretty good, considering they didn't have rye bread.

I always ask for everything except olives and double jalapenos in place of the olives...

I think I used to ask for everything as well, but am not sure anymore.

The only way I can do it is if I have a ready battle plan when I go in that I can repeat like a record: light sesame bun, regular cheese, warmed up, no olives, jalapeños or pickles (conveniently all in the same row). Also, hold the oregano, but add pepper. The things I have to decide just before going in are the size of the bun, the meat filing and the sauce (I have started favouring southwest).

I generally tend to do that as well. I have to plan it first so I know exactly what I want. If we go to a restaurant, I often look the menu up on the internet before we go so it gets easier to make a decision when I'm there.

I am not experienced enough with Subway, clearly. It sounds horribly complicated.

As with a lot of places, it's a case of being ready for the questions they are likely to ask.
I've seen people completely stumped for a good few seconds when asked "Toasted?" out of the blue.

also, they've changed things so they no longer ask you if you want free cheese. You are allowed free cheese, but you have to ask for it yourself.

We get asked if we want cheese and then have to choose which cheese. It seems every time I go they have some new question, just to keep you on your toes.

Subway only do one veggie option - the 'veggie patty', which is quite expensive but OK if you add cheese slices and all the salads etc.
For their budget range they advertise something called 'Veggie Delite', so one day I went for that. Turns out it's just the cheese slices and salad on their own... so in other words it's a nothing sandwich. :/

Last year was my first experience of Subway. I paused, trying to work out the system, saw an advert for tuna melt and went for it. Then came the questions, what sort of roll (six choices), 6-inch or 12-inch, cheese, type of cheese, warm or cold, salad (I went for everything), staying or taking out, and finally did I want a can of diet coke for only 20p?
Next time I was ready for it and ordered exactly the same as the previous occasion.

When I was in college, I was so poor I used to eat the veggie delight with everything, because it was the only thing I could afford. I think it was only $2.75 for a 6" back then.

That sounds cheap ... it would be twice that (nearly) here.

The 15cm (6 in) sub of the day is 3,90€ I think.

That sounds cheap ... it would be twice that (nearly) here. It's such a con though - as part of their £3 menu, Subway offers meat eaters a choice of ham and salad, beef and salad, spicy sausage and salad or turkey and salad. For veggies they offer... just the salad. For the same price.

It was still better and more interesting than the average German sandwich which is buttered bread and one slice of cheese or something like that.

Julie I think you can ask for extra salad though it's still a con I agree. I always ask for double something else on the grounds that I don't have olives so I think you could have the veggie and ask for double everything.

Inspired by this thread, I got a sandwich from Subways on Wednesday. It was ok, but now I won't need one for another 5 years or more.

Subway is better than Arby's.
I think that is what is called 'faint praise'.
Just out of interest, do 'sandwich chains' also include burger joints?

Not to me. I know that in the US burgers are sometimes referred to as 'sandwiches' though.
