What is the point of such a feature?

Obviously to keep sadistic administrators content.

A lot of boards I have been on limit post counts to be added to only from "real" discussions, and things like games and chit-chat boards don't contribute to them, that is probably why.

That is so fucked up. Excuse the language. But seriously it is. Whoever invented it and thought it a good idea is clearly somebody who'd go Nazi.

No, I get it. A lot of people who like contributing to real discussions feel a lot of resentment for being "ranked" lower simply because they don't contribute multitudes of empty fluff. If we could remove the post count from being visible I would suggest it, the friendliest forums I have been on didn't have them. Then post counts would be pretty much irrelevant. Much nicer for occasional posters to feel welcome.

Maybe it should be more visible, or at least flag up to someone to show it had been switched, or be more limited. Or something!

Why do people even care that it wa turned off? Competitive post-counts?

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS BUT THE POST TOTAL!!!!!

I like to see how many posts I've made. It's good, a little healthy competition.
Besides, people who want to participate only in serious discussion are usually perfectly welcomed by the serious discussion people. I think. I haven't been on that many forums granted. It just seems very pretentious to me to count some posts as more important. If all posts were off that would be fair, but to only have some not count isn't. But I do like the post counts, it's fun.

Like I said, if we could disable the visiblity of post counts, I'd be all for that. As is, I know what its like to come to a board and be daunted by people having tens of thousands of posts. It makes you acutely aware of how chummy the other people obviously must be with each other, and makes people feel unnecessarily excluded. It makes little difference how the regulars view it, it feels unwelcoming.
Now I feel like I'm back is school. Yech. There one party might feel it was "fun" while the other party felt bullied.

Yeah I remember the first time I ever posted on a forum. I was so intimidated and actually turned red after posting, even though nobody could see or even know who I was! I got over that pretty quickly.

Admit, this is only because I now have more posts than you.

But you're also older.

Than I was last year? True.
Or older than Miisa and therefore automatically a bully? I resent the implication!

Again, I missed the posts on the second page. I forget now what I was puzzled by but it wasn't anything significant.

Nah, I'll just ban him for a few days until I catch up.

Ah yes, good thinking. Or just ban him during working hours.

I *can* post during office hours, but I choose not to because I'd otherwise get no work done!

I would like to join the NASA space travel forum but there are too many learned people with thousands of posts. I have to admit it has put me off.
|
|
|
Post by raspberrybullets on Aug 4, 2013 19:53:57 GMT
But is that the posts or the learnedness of the people?
|
|
|
Post by tangent on Aug 4, 2013 19:59:32 GMT
Both really. I spent several months learning about the subject matter on one particular topic and feel I can just about manage to post without looking a right idiot but the number of posts is also putting me off.
