In Germany, people celebrate mostly on Christmas Eve. But since I have spent every Christmas in England since 2009, I got used to Christmas being the 25th and celebrating it on the 24th would seem wrong to me now. It is funny how quickly you can get used to new things.

We managed to get most of our shopping done on the day before Christmas Eve. But traffic was fairly light and the supermarket car park wasn't full at 10 o'clock in the morning on Christmas Eve.

In Sweden we celebrate the Eve days. New Years's Eve is bigger than New Year's Day, Midsummer's Eve is bigger than Midsummar*s Day and Christmas Eve is bigger than Christmas Day.
The Christmas presents are given on Christmas Eve. In the afternoon usually.
The first eating of the Christmas ham is done this day. Of course, ham is more Yule than Christmas.

During Elizabethan times, and probably for a long time before that, the day started at dusk. And so Christmas Eve (dusk to midnight) was the first part of the 24 hours that made up Christmas Day. It would be natural, therefore, to start the celebrations on Christmas Eve.

My ex-boyfriend is Jewish and he used to call Dec. 24 erev Christmas --"erev" being the Hebrew term for the evening before.

Christmas Eve is the great celebration day of Christmas. The extended family comes this day. The Christmas presents are given. Sometimes the day ends with Christmas mass in church. In earlier times when we all peasants, there was Julotta in the early morning of Christmas day instead.
Christmas day is more the day you read your Christmas books, eat left-overs, play parlor games, watch TV. (Love Actually is a popular Christmas film on TV.) Or going to the pictures. My daughter and I went to see Unknown solder. The tears streamed. In war films, most people die. Also, my father participated in this war.
The Boxing day is the day for visiting, and we will visit my cousin and her daughter.

It's sunny today, which reminds me that going for a walk on Boxing Day is traditional.
As, sadly, is having mounds of washing up and tidying. We may leave wrapping paper on the floor for a bit longer though because our younger cat loves pouncing on it. (It's our excuse for anything being left on the floor - it was either intended as a cat toy or adopted as a cat toy.)
And, untraditionally, I'm still quite ill with coughing and blocked nose. But getting better. So I am not sure about that walk.

It's rotten having a cold at Christmas (or anytime really), and I hope you get better soon. I went for a 4-mile walk (or so my Christmas present told me). 9000 steps, with a maximum pulse rate of 97 bpm. And I burnt off 1566 calories. I don't know how I've survived without it. The nicest part of the walk, apart from checking my fitness monitor, was seeing the crowds of people lining the canal with scarves and walking boots

Why did the canal need lining? And were scarves and boots really the best option?

The canal always needs lining, but not usually with scarves and berets.

Hmmm, might be fun to have one. I don't think I walk enough during a normal day. Fortunately I cycle to school, so that helps.
