People were probably generally eating less then.

Animal fats were an important source of calories. Butter, lard, pork fat, cheese and full cream milk. But we also had vegetables in abundance and I think that's why we were healthy.

Yes, I think today people often eat too much fat and not much else.

I do not have a sweet tooth (except chocolate) but my diet is too carb heavy.

I think a lot of people have diets which are too carb-heavy.

I have never understood how anyone can eat that from the jar. I would find the taste way too intense.

It's also scrumptious if you mix it with vanilla icecream. And a bit of peanut butter in there is also good.

It is nice if you mix it with other things. I just wouldn't choose it by itself.

I have never been that keen on nutella. If I am gonna have chocolate spread I prefer it not to be polluted with hazlenuts

I rarely have it, either. If I do, it's not nutella, but some lactose-free chocolate spread.

My most beloved foods are crap foods.....Eggs Benedict is salted meat with a sauce of egg yolks. I love corn dogs, which are frankfurters on a stick, dipped in a cornmeal batter and deep fried....with copious quantities of screaming yellow mustard. 'Deep fried' fat- and nitrite-laden offal. As 'balanced' as a good meal of fish & chips might be, most of the meal is deep fried and saturated with fats. Donuts...I love plain donuts or old-fashioned, the latter usually comes with a sugar glaze. Again, deep fried bread, usually with lots of sugar. And, last....Biscuits & sausage gravy. Heart attack on a plate.

I have never been a big fan of sausages at all.

I have always had intestinal issues, and I recently discovered a list of foods that has things to avoid (as they contain lots of fermentable carbs) and ones that are likely better if one does have tummy troubles. I seem to feel much better when sticking to it, but that is sometimes difficult to do consistently, especially with company around. Also, the "avoid" list has many of the things that make life worth living.

especially with company around. That doesn't happen very often.

Interesting. Your acceptable foodmap looks much like my housemate's foodmap....except that she allows herself copious quantities of coffee, significant wine intake, and a weakness for milkfats.
Me? My constitution seems to rebel against some fats, like most milkfats. Butter often smells rancid to me, but not others. Some oils cause congestion. I avoid hard cheeses because they not only can induce the congestion, but lead to later constipation. If I want milk products, I rely upon low-fat options, like cottage cheese, or high-flavor types, like asiago and romano, which can be used in modest amounts.
I can eat gluten products. My housemate has tried to excise it entirely. She assures me that with her regular flax, non-gluten fruit and bran muffins, pro-biotics, and fresh fruits and vegetables, her digestive processes have improved considerably. I must admit that gluten-free replacement products, like pasta in particular, have improved hugely in recent years.

Of course, knowing how vile it looks rather assures that you'll never order it. You'll never get 'tastes' from my vile biscuits and sausage gravy. Ever. Go ahead...order the strawberry waffles.

I clearly have a problem with lactose, but even when I avoid it completely, I have problems. Haven't managed to figure out what to avoid, though and am too anxious to try to figure it out.

You might benefit from trying out the FODMAP recommendations on the site, in the past I also figured it couldn't be a lactose intolerance issue that causing my problems as lactocse-free diets didn't help. I had no idea that so many fruits, vegetables, and grains could be such a big part of the problem also. I also kept a food diary for a few weeks with what I ate and when and what if any symptoms I had later on, and after a couple of weeks I had got to the point where I had almost no symptoms as I had cut out the problematic things.

The list is really long, though. That's what scares me because there wouldn't be much left that I could eat, plus I'd have to buy food which is much more expensive than what we get now. That kind of makes me anxious. But I'll think about it and see if I can at least replace some things from the list with alternatives that are better and not too expensive.

Notice that there is a bad list (red background) and a good list (green background). I was delighted to have my suspicions confirmed that potatoes and rice are ok.

While it's a long way from an exact match, there's an awful lot of what I find instinctively feel to be bad or good foods on that list.

I've seen the good list, but a lot of that stuff is too expensive. Although it would probably make me lose quite a bit of weight if I just stuck with the things I can afford which would be wonderful.
