Armenia, Iceland, France, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Armenia, Malta, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and and and the rest of them are just awful. The beginning of Greece was ok, but it has started to suck.

So far my favorite is Italy because I can't understand a word.

Whoa. I thought Ireland wasn't involved in this abomination. Nicky Byrne could use some lessons from David Byrne.

Ugh. Did Max Martin write all of these songs?

I reallyreallyreally don't like Justin Timberlake, but I think his was the best song I've heard on this painful display of mediocrity or worse.

Were you watching the final or each country in YouTube? Because some you mentioned, like Ireland, weren't in last night's final.
Also, keep in mind that the songs have to be specifically made for Eurovision, so a country can't take an already existing hit and submit that. The campness and spectacle are all part of the charm. I think Australians get it, whereas I can't imagine the greater American public getting onboard with it. The UK press at least - perhaps also the public by extension - also struggles with grasping the essential Eurovisionness of it and teeters wildly between a) thinking it is a real competition that one should care about and b) ridiculing and scoffing it in a non-ironic way. Maybe at least partly due to that they are always guaranteed a finals slot, no matter how much the act never had a chance. The fact that Timberlake was performing appeared to be a nod towards the US audience, hope they don't start catering to that. The whole charm of the ESC was summed up so perfectly in that Love Love Peace Peace act in the Interval.

I'm still trying to watch all the videos. Ukraine was extremely dramatic and I thought Austria was just horrible. I have to admit I was a little disappointed for the German singer. We had seen her win the competition of "The Voice of Germany" and I liked the fact that she was a bit different, plus I liked her voice. But Germany is not generally known for grerat music these days, so I wasn't really expecting much. Still, I thought she was better than the singers of the past years, including the winner from 2010 whi is still desperately trying to be cute. We saw a bit of the party in Hamburg after the show last night because that was on TV when we came home. The last band on there, a German band, was called Silly. I had never heard of them, but the singer looked like the embodiment of the typical German woman the way they seem to imagine her abroad - which was quite sad.

Year after year people complain that the songs are not good enough. They totally miss the point. If it was just about the songs, you could have the competition on radio. It is about different styles, the show, the clothes, the artists and whole Europe "coming together" and having a party. When I was young, I was just interested in the different songs and who won. Nowadays I'm fascinated by the voting. Which country votes for which? (I am really sour at Norway giving Sweden zero points).
This new way of presenting first the jury's votes and then the people's telehone votes, made the competition more exciting. Australia was the jury's favorourite and Russia the people's but Ukraine won. (Personally I prefer Australia to both Russia and Ukraine)

Do you watch the 2 minute compilation of Swedish hits? Lots there I didn't know were Swedish Is this on YouTube or anywhere? I can't find it, but it seemed like a big deal - they mentioned the director and regular music videos he's known for (Madonna's)?

Maybe it can't be shown on youtube for copyright reasons? There were 76 successful songs on four minutes in the video by Jonas Åkerlund. Among the artists: Abba, Roxette, Björn Skifs, Carola, Harpo, Robyn, The Cardigans, Europe, The Ark, Avicii, Titiyo, Swedish House Mafia, Icona Pop etc.

Did you see Gina Dirawi's mistranslation of the Swedish proverb "Finns det hjärterum, finns det sjärterum" (if there is room in the heart, there is room for the butt/s).

Were you watching the final or each country in YouTube? Because some you mentioned, like Ireland, weren't in last night's final. I was just watching each one on youtube until I started feeling nauseous. Watching the whole final prolly would have killed me. I don't see us getting on board with it, except for preteens, tweens, and people who like to watch Idol. It's like the Olympics of bad music.

Yeah I didn't think that it would go down all that well in the US . No offence to Americans but I hope they don't start competing. They'd take it too seriously

Yes, it is a well-known 'secret' that most countries don't actually play to win. Because hosting it is a major hassle. But the whole campy badness is part of the charm.
