I was talking with someone recently who had a lot of spiders - happily they do not live very near to me. I can't understand the appeal, personally. I mean, we have sevennowsix legged bathroom spider and his paramour and I can live with them but the idea of keeping a spider in a habitat as an actual pet makes my skin crawl. I do wonder what the cats would make of it though ..

I guess they would be fascinated for a few days and then ignore it completely. Cleo (cat) did that with Lucy (snake).

I would definitely never want to own a tarantula or any other kind of spider. Not sure if I would visit a person who did. I liked Lucy, but my mother found it scary to hear about her.

I did once fancy a tarantula and when Deborah first wanted a snake, I said she could have one if I could have a tarantula. That put her off a while but when she did eventually get a snake, I rather liked it.

I'm not sure if I had been ready to visit you knowing there was a tarantula in the house. The snake was cute.

I would have warned you.

Yes, but I would probably have worried about the tarantula escaping and surprising me.

I would probably have invited you to hold it.

I would probably have invited you to hold it. And as a reaction you might have witnessed a full-blown panic attack!

I'd visit a house with a tarantula in it but I'd hope that the host had more respect for both me and the spider in question than to ask that I held it. Snakes I can live with - I neither like nor dislike them and although I would not want to own one I do not fear them - but big hairy spiders is something entirely different.

There's a difference between asking out of courtesy and asking with expectation and imposition.

There's a difference between asking out of courtesy and asking with expectation and imposition. Hopefully. Theoretically, it would probably be good confrontation therapy, but I'm not sure I would want that when visiting someone.

My idea of a nightmare would be living in a block of flats where another resident was keeping spiders, though presumably there'd be nothing illegal about them doing so.
