I came home to find a half gallon lug of low-fat eggnog in the fridge.
'Tis the season.
I'm normally not an eggnog fan at all, but it does mean one really good thing.
Pumpkin pie is probably widely available. YEAH.

I made pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. It was delish! I ate the last piece for breakfast yesterday. And now I can go back to being low-carb.

Yes! A 12 inch diameter pumpkin pie came home from Costco yesterday... I cut a piece and slathered it with copious whipped cream....Mmmmmmm-mmmm.

It's like a spiced custard....primary spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice.
Real eggnog is dangerous. It's made with rum, whiskey, and brandy.

We refer to it all as pumpkin. I made a pumpkin pie once and it was really delicious! I probably used butternut squash to make it. I wish I could remember which recipe I used, cos I remember it was from the BBC good food website but they have a few versions.
My mum loves to make eggnog, then she has to "taste" it when she makes it, which means she scoops a ladle of it and drinks that!

Um...a baked yam? (And, I'm unsure as to what an 'orange squash' is, as both butternut and acorn squash have orange meat. Roasted butternut squash are orange. Roasted acorn squash are orange. And, roasted yams are pretty orange as well. There are subtle differences in flavor, but they are all similar. Frappe the pulp and add bunches of sugar, eggs, condensed milk, ginger, allspice, cardoman, cloves and such, and then bake it in a pieshell. The final consistency is that of a firm custard, rather like that of cheesecake. Sweetly spiced. I expect copious quantities of whipped cream when I consume my slice. (Unfortunately, at this time of year the phrase 'pumpkin spice' has been known to drive some batshit crazy...it is noxious when it appears practically everywhere and persists incessantly, like the holiday season. But, also like the holiday season, it does go away. So, it's a chronic nuisance with acute symptomology associated with the holiday seson.)

Orange squash is concentrated orange juice, usually with added sugar. Sugar-free squash is also available. To qualify as squash, it must be concentrated before being diluted for drinking.
If you want orange juice in a pub, you have to ask for 'fresh orange'. It usually comes in a carton or bottle.
Yes, we call that game squash.

One of my very favourite Dutch things to say was "vers geperst sinaasappelsap" which is freshly squeezed orange juice.

LOL yeah orange juice can be called 'fresh' here even if it's from concentrate - it just means you don't have to dilute it yourself. If you do have to dilute it it is, as Steve has pointed out, squash. Squash comes in different qualities and some are not so bad but generally I don't care for it. I used to have it every day when I was a kid with my packed lunch *winces at the memory*

We've made pumpkin pie (and its angelic cousin, pumpkin torte) with more standard looking pumpkins that we baked ourselves, but I prefer the texture and taste of canned pumpkin.
