So...I assented to attend the holiday gathering at Swimmer's school, where she earned her LMT certification and where she works at the clinic every Friday. I was my typical introvert self, broadcasting obvious body language of "I'm here. I'm uncomfortable. I want to go home." But, hey, I came for the food. They did not disappoint.
Devil's Eggs were the downfall this party. Damn, they were good. Thirty six of those tidbits on the half egg and I got more than my share. Hard boiled, it was. I ate way too many, but, in my defense, I left a great deal of the cherry strudel for others.
I am incorrigible.
Then, another plate of two dozen half eggs showed. I, of course, sampled. I had one. That was it. Too much tumeric.
Evidently, I am discerning and fickle.
Who knew?

"Hey! What happened to all the deviled eggs, any way?"
"Goats got in to them."

I love deviled eggs. I make them with chopped smoked salmon though.

Hmmm...That could cut both ways. I'd certainly be willing to sample.

I keep meaning to try to make them - I've never had one. What do you traditionally put in it? Just the yolk with mayo? I like the idea of smoked salmon, maybe even a little chilli ... tiny bit of chopped tomato?

I make mine with mayo, chopped red onion and the smoked salmon. You can add a bit of lemon juice if you want.

I make it with a bit of mustard, mayo, chili and some herbs.

Here is a gallery of variations upon a theme. (...and Farther Kye's most eggs-ellent suggestion does NOT appear! For shame!)

Go the other way...I happened to paste it on the last page....21 of 21. If I use left arrow, it takes me down thru the recipes from 21/21 to 1/21.

My mum used to make some sort of version of deviled eggs, they were always yum.
Not so sure I would have passed up on the cherry strudel though! Unless of course, one slice indicated it wasn't a great strudel.

It was an okay strudel. Not a great strudel.
I thought others should enjoy more of it and less of the first batch of deviled eggs. It was a unilateral choice in the face of an existential crisis.
I felt vindicated and much less guilty when the second batch showed.

See, cherry strudel would not have appealed to me. Apple on the other hand?

I don't see what's wrong with cherry strudel. After apple, cherry is probably the best fruit to have in anything baked! My dad always makes me drool when he reminisces about his grandmothers cherry and poppyseed strudel. Apparently she would make the pastry on the large kitchen table and stretch it out until it was super thin and see through. But then sometimes it would break and she'd start cursing. I always wished I could try some.

I find cooked cherries not very nice. I dunno why that is cos I am happy with raw cherries and glace ones. Just not otherwise cooked ones.

I have to admit, when I have fresh cherries in front of me, it's hard to consider doing anything to such a wonderful fruit except eating it! Cherries have had a hard time this season and are very expensive this summer.

Are you saying cherries are 'high maintenance'?
This is the same event that had the prunes stuffed with Dubliner cheese and wrapped in strip bacon and baked until the bacon was crisp.
I didn't know what they were, other than wrapped in crispy bacon, so I ate one. Then, I had to eat another one to better identify all the ingredients. I guessed and had my guess confirmed by little descriptive cards attached to each served dish. Wow. I normally don't even think of prunes. I don't hate them or anything, just don't eat them. But hey, stuffed with cheese and wrapped with bacon....well, I'd do that one again.

Anything stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon sounds pretty good to me! The other day I made a cheese board and had dates on it, was very nice with the cheeses.
I did have a cherries yesterday, they were reduced to $15 a kilo (from the $20) they've been all summer so far! Poor high maintenance cherries.

Cherries are wonderful and at £2.20 a quarter that's pretty reasonable.

So...For the 25th, I did the traditional Jewish Christmas dinner...I went out for Chinese food. In particular, I was doing recon on a yet untried restaurant. We have lost our tried and true standby Chinese restaurant to development. So we have been sampling amongst unknown contenders, looking for similar quality to the custom lost. This was to be one.
It is the Szechuan Chef and I ordered Crispy Manchu Chicken, Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce, and Shredded Pork Dumplings, with tea, of course.
The Manchu Chicken was a winner. The dumplings were fine, but came late. I suspect they would have been better had I not stuffed my face with Manchu Chicken.
The Eggplant came with the Manchu Chicken, but....I'm telling you here...I got it for Swimmer. I had hoped that it would not be breaded, and it is not. She loves eggplant. To me, the dish looks like giant slugs in dirty crankcase oil. I didn't touch it. The dumplings are great and will reheat well, but the reheated chicken didn't fly too well, as the breading goes moosh.

I don't mind Egg - erm, aubergines, but I've never had them in the context of Chinese cuisine. I normally only have them in a Mousakka.
