ESC is big in Sweden. We have had four semifinals and one "Second chance". This evening it is the final, which one goes to Kiev. (I don't think we have to fear winning this time.)
The most interesting is that one of the contestants will be 88 years old today. He had his first hit in 1953, and this song "Boogieman Blues" sounds like it is from that period too. He had pneumonia for three weeks around Christmas, he is blind on one eye and has to be lead on the scene. But I like how he is not giving up, he works out in the gym and still performs. But I would not like if his song was Sweden's entry. I would fear he would fall dead on the scene!

I thought the songs were supposed to be original. This sounds like "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."

Well, a lot of the contributions remind of other songs. I read that one reminds of Country roads by John Denver, another one of Happy with Pharrell Williams and a third like a mix of Younger by Seinabo and by Hozi Personally I always like the Sami joik but I doubt it would go well in ESC: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WWjx54GePE

So this is the Swedish entry in Kiev:
The voting is complicated. First an international jury votes. Then the Swedish people. If only the Swedish people had voted, this would have been the winner (my favourite too):

I think I heard an Aussie is in it again. Not really my type of music though.

I'm not sure if we will be able to watch it this year. Might be possible online, we have been able to see a few programmes live online.

Tonight is the first semifinal. And the first entry is Sweden's "I can't go on" with Robin Bengtsson. So I worry if he will go on to the final. To be the first is bad; by the time people vote they have forgotten the first entries

The theme is "Celebrate Diversity" and then we see three white men as moderators.

Sweden made it but not Finland and Iceland.
Australia made it of course. And Portugal, the only song not sung in English. Sounded kind of old-fashioned.

It seems Finland only gets in if we have a gimmick or are super-peppy. This was a beautiful but sad song, so no luck.
Will probably still watch on Saturday.

I fear JoeP will be rather disappointed with the lack of Graham Norton on Saturday. On the other hand, Graham and previous hosts could be the reason England is so cynical about the whole thing...

I heard that UK did not give even one point to ABBA's Waterloo in 1974. We will never forgive you! I liked the Finnish song Blackbird. Maybe it was too quit and did not stick out. There were many ballads this semifinal: I voted for Finland (sung by a woman in a decent black dress) as well as for Iceland's Paper (sung by a woman in an undecent white dress):

The only ones I heard sung off-key. It was a disgrace.
