I found out from my Ancestry results that a goodly proportion of my DNA comes from Eastern Europe. And most of the rest comes from Western Europe. What surprised me is that I don't have and British --just some Welsh and Scottish. I guess I just assumed...

As far as sauerkraut goes, I do recall having it with knockwurst every so often growing up. It was never my favorite, but I think I may have to try it again. Some here in the states put it on their hot dogs, so perhaps I'll have to give that a try. I guess I'm not a very good German, food-wise. I'd have made a better Italian.

I like lots of foods more than German food: Indian, Italian, Chinese (though I haven't tried the really exotic things). German food seems too bland in comparison. At the moment everyone is eating asparagus again. Am not fond of that, either, at least not the way it is cooked here.

In Budapest I had the bestest torte. I think it was walnut and light chocolate. It was called an Esterhazy torte. I had it at the Anonymous Cafe, lakeside at the Transylvanian castle in Schecheneyi Park. Torte!

I'm wondering what the food will be like in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. So...Now that you have been, what was it like? I'm guessing it is a cross of German, Slavic, and Scandinavian, all jumbled together.

I had the bestest pierogi at the Jewish restuarant in Krakow. And, since they were meat pierogi, there was no sour cream served with them...still, they were the best.
I enjoyed the sauerkraut and dumplings and fried ham I had at the Slovakian ski resort.
I've already noted the tasty torte in Budapest.
I greatly enjoyed the large number of bakery/cafes throughout eastern Europe. Flaky breadstuffs were ubiquitious and tasty...and always with good coffee.
I tried to avoid 'western' outlets like Starbucks, McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, California Coffee, Costa, and the like...but they were the one's which were profligate with the crushed ice in beverages (including coffee and tea).

So...Exactly what the doctor ordered you to stay away from, eh?
I had chicken paprikas, twice (just to be sure), and was enormously underwhelmed.
