is what's for dinner. Not home made though - from the chiller cabinet. I really must try making my own one of these days .. probably nicer (though this is jolly nice too )

Fish pie is basically fish in a white sauce (often with parsley) and topped with mashed potato. No pastry.

Really! Wow --I was thinking it was like meat pie, only with fish.

Doesn't sound that appealing to me.

Fishcakes are similar but they have the potato mixed in with the fish instead of in a layer on top.

Fish pies tend to have a lot more sauce than fish cakes. I prefer them in a cheese sauce personally

Fish pie is lovely too!

I'm having a hard time picturing fish pie. Is it just a glop of fish in a white sauce with mashed potatoes on top? Does it have a form?

Does it have a form? Mostly boring, I fear.

So why do they call it a pie if it's just some fish in sauce topped with mashed potato? I'm puzzled!

Because that's what a pie is *is puzzled at why Kye is puzzled*

But... but pie has a FORM! It's PIE shaped.

Hence you put it in a pie shape, drop the potato gunk on top of it and bake it in the oven. Voila, pie shaped fish pie.

Yes, pies have form, they are usually made in containers that give them form.

Ah! That's what my mind's eye was missing --the pan. And I didn't realize the whole thing went into the oven. You had me confused with the "no crust" part.

You've heard of Shepherd's or Cottage Pie, yes?

Yep! I see it's like that now.

But with fish yes . I am not normally that enamoured of that sort of thing - I like meat and I like potatoes so I do not know why not but for some reason I prefer my pies to have pastry - but I do make an exception for fish pie.

It sounds good. Sometimes pastry makes me feel slightly nauseous, even though I like it. It's too rich.

You have to get the balance right and alas a lot of pies don't

To get the balance right, you need a pie chart on a balance.
