I don't see him as a Christ figure, but I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter books, so I'm not the best judge.

There's no Christ figure in Harry Potter. True, but ignoring the glaring contridction in reasoning can't really be argued away by that.

I think they can allow magic in Narnia since it can been seen as a metaphor for the mystery of God; however, in the Harry Potter books magic seems to simply serve the wishes of the magician (which is a more satanic kind of idea). But as I said, I'm not an expert in the Harry Potter book. Nor am I someone who much understands American Evangelicals!

So, what does it take for a 'christ figure' in your literature?
How is it that the idea of entering another, what, dimension, or world, by stepping in to a common wardrobe, not 'satanic'?

Yeah the fact that Lewis appealed to American fundie types never made any sense to me. From his autobiographical works he didn't seem to have much in common with them. He wrote in Surprised by Joy, for instance, that he had no problem with homosexuality, though he was not that way inclined himself.

There's also the fact that in Narnia, for a long time the children were 'worshipping' Aslan without recognising him as Christ .. I'd have thought some people would have problems with that (well technically some people did .. there are a few whacko anti Lewis sites out there)

That's the thing with fanatics: there are always huge holes in their logic, but somehow they manage to twist yours to fill them. I.e. if there is a hole A they will fill that hole with your logic B turned upside down since if it isn't B, it's got to be A.

Yes, it's all a good deal easier if you are prepared to leave a margin for human error. Lots and lots of problems with a completely literal view of things.

I think on a deeper level he is something of a Christ figure, though that is not explicitly spelled out. But he sacrificed himself to save both Harry and also Draco.

I'd say Gandalf was more of a Christ figure than Dumbledore.

Gandalf is an Odin/Wotan figure.

He does get ressurected though. But I don't want to spoil the books for myself by thinking of them as christian allegory. Although, considering how up themselves the elves are and how they love to blame everyone else for the problems they cause, it does sound a lot like many religions.
The His Dark Materials books actually have god in them, and the christians hate those too!

I wasn't that keen on HDM though not cos they had God in them . I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks that elves are 'up themselves' though!

It wasn't much fun after the American Evangelicals moved in... Who were the American Evangicals there?

It's funny though: HArry Potter was denounced as the work of the devil because it contained magic and Narnia is okay... and it contains magic. I never understood any of that type of reasoning!

I jest ... I think. Anyway the drain to Facebook and other things has been going on for years, has it not? Well, yeah...But there was a time when there was no FB and there was a EF, and an FF, and a SC. I remember then, in fact... it was a link to FB that got me started there.... I believe it was Moose's game.... Then I joined another game called Castle Age and that was my undoing...

I've been diligently trying to catch up on here again. I prefer having the option to see everything and pick what I want to see or respond to, but I have too many friends on Facebook who can't be bothered. Facebook chooses for me, and not very well at that. The only other place I go regularly is Twitter, although that is currently about 90% Trump due to his insanity!

I only do this group, Freethought Forum, my modeling forum, and F******k.
I still read at TFT when it gets slow around here, but I'm sure that will fade....it's one reason I knew I could fly off the handle; I didn't care any more.
F******k, although addictive, is also losing it's luster. The impositions in terms of advertising and crappy videos....FFS! It has become an abomination.
