I did not know much about this man other than that he was a Republican politician and that Trump had infamously made a slur against him because he (McCain) had been a prisoner of war. What I've read since his death suggests to me that, though there was a lot I'd have not agreed with him over, nonetheless he was a decent man and if there has to be a GOP President then someone like him would be far preferable.

He ran against Obama in 2008 for presidency. He made the mistake, in many people's view-myself included, to pick a running mate, Sarah Palin. I don't think he would've won even if he hadn't picked her as his vice-presidential candidate, but picking her certainly sealed his fate. He was a good man but like you Moose I disagreed with him on many policies. He made himself famous recently when he flagrantly flung a thumb's down at Mitch McConnell in the senate against the GOP's proposal to dismantle Obamacare. In that moment I was quite in agreement with him and rather cheered him on.

I had a great deal of respect for him even though I don't support Republican policies. He was a decent man. Trump had infamously made a slur against him because he (McCain) had been a prisoner of war. Whilst Trump avoided conscription so he couldn't be captured.

Yeah, he must have rued choosing Palin - I suspect intelligence was at fault there and she was just not thoroughly investigated. I tried to read her 'tribute' to him but there were just too many 'gosh darns' in it and I feared for my blood pressure.

Well yes I was thinking that too But I think she was not properly vetted. They evidently just decided they wanted a female Christian candidate and did not bother to find out that she was spectacularly unintelligent and ignorant.

Good fun to watch Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live, though.

I can't take her serious enough to even consider any written work she would create.

On the news they reported that Trump decided to make his dislike of the man known even after his death by taking down the half flag early. What a prick.

Yeah, well, he's not invited to my funeral, either.

Sure. I suspect that there will be plenty of online chatter if you're on the right channels, but I would not encourage you to cross that distance physically. It's a long boring flight and I wouldn't be there when you finally arrived. Well, an animated me would not be there.

We would be able to talk to you, though, even if you weren't able to talk back. That may be an advantage

As for McCain, I would have referenced him as a typical rockribbed conservative with impeccable military credentials. He was a MIC warhawk shill, basically.
He is very anti-torture as he has actually undergone torture. He brings a unique perspective on that topic to the halls of governance, where it is desperately needed.

Generally speaking, and ignoring his running mate, would he have been a better president than Obama?

Generally speaking, and ignoring his running mate, would he have been a better president than Obama? No. I don't think so. I think he would have been far more volatile and militarily rash. He was a 'hawk' and was far more willing to use firepower to settle controversies.
