You're using a quote about racism and immigration from the Daily Mail? Curious.

I assume they did quote our prime minister Löfven correctly. The journalists are from Associated Press.
The results are hithertoo very even.

i gather it's been a bad day for Sweden - lot of support for very far right parties

I'm dispappointed that the Green Party lost votes after this long hot summer with forest fires. The climate change is the most important issue imo. The Swedendemocrats otoh grew bigger.
It is very even between the two big blocs. If the right-wing and christdemocrats accept the Swedendemocrats, they will form a majority. (I don't think the Liberals or the Centre Party will accept the Swedendemocrats.)
Maybe we have too many parties. 8 parties in the parliament.

I think we should worry about the rise of the Right Wing everywhere in the world

We still have no government. 144 mandates for the redgreen bloc, centre-right 143 mandates, 62 Swedendemocrats. Both blocs say the will NOT cooperate with the Swedendemocrats but I wonder. The counting will be finished tomorrow, they say.
Belgium went without government for over 500 days, Germany for 6 months. So I guess we should not worry, Löfven may lead a caretaker government. I hope there will not be a new election!

Greece avoids this sort of stalemate by awarding the largest party extra seats. It seems eminently sensible but it could still have its problems.

Well yeah, if the largest party is not the one you voted for

The counting is finished at last. No changes, 144 for the redgreen bloc, 143 for the Alliance and 62 for the Swedendemocrats.
If there are no agreements, the next step is choosing a speaker. Usually the speaker is from the largest party, but I wonder if the parliament can agree even on this. Then it is the speaker's job to suggest prime minister, but the parliament can vote no. The speaker can propose four different candidates and if none is accepted, there will be a new election.
I can't remember that it has been this complicated before.

Well yeah, if the largest party is not the one you voted for I meant, it could still result in a hung parliament. For example, A gets 101 seats, and is awarded and extra 24 seats. Party B gets 100 seats. Party C gets 25 seats. Party A hates both B and C but B and C love each other. Then you have a stalemate.

Why is that? What is the middle to you?

Post by whollygoats on Sept 29, 2018 5:49:25 GMT
The middle to me is Sanders. The far middle is the GOP and the 'New Democrats' (aka the Clinton Democrats). They are the tools of the predatory parasitic class of kleptonomic plutocrats. But then so are the Trumpettes and Trump is their fascist cult leader, who seems to be a tool of the Russian oligarchs and a traitor to his own country. And you voted for that!

The speaker has had "fika" (coffe and cookies) 8 times yesterday with all 8 party leaders. Now he shall suggest which one is to be prime minister. After that the parliament will vote.

Over two months since the election and still no government. Löfven is temporary prime minister. The new election seems to be unavoidable. The Liberal parties do not accept the Socialdemocrats (Labour) and not the populist Swedendemocrats. "I'd rather eat my old shoes!"

Is it the case that the left are split into far too many factions?
|
|
|
Post by spaceflower on Nov 18, 2018 13:46:20 GMT
Too many parties overall. The biggest parti the Socialdemocrats, the Leftist party and then some call the Green party leftist also. The liberals are also split in two parties, the conservatives are also split in two parties. 8 parties in the parliament.
What if the country is just as much devided even after a new election?

After over four months we have a government. Still the Socialdemocratic and Green parties. But the Socialdemocrats agreed to a list of 73 items which the Liberal parties demanded. But they were not interested in taking part of the governing.
So now the Socialdemocrats have agreed to govern not after their party programme and election promises but after the Liberals' programmes. Everything to stay in power. And the Leftist Party let it happen, they are a door mat.
I've totally lost faith in the politicians now.
