At what time are we likely to start seeing results? I presume it's only mid afternoon on the West Coast

I have been disappointed and chocked twice (Brexit and president election). I am afraid I will be disappointed again, the Republicans will win both the Senate and the House.

They are cautiously suggesting that the Dems will get the house.

Democrats have won the House, Republicans increase their majority in the Senate. Trump hails the elections as a "tremendous success".

So would anyone care to give me a brief explanation of what powers the House and Senate have? Is Trump justified in being so pleased? I know it'll be more uncomfortable for him with the House being Democrat, but what can they actually do?

Not just that,
Trump fires US Attorney General Jeff Sessions
says the BBC. So he's now able to get rid of the people who could prove his Russian collusion... because the Senate will now let him.
Let's face it, a Senate that doesn't believe in climate change is perfectly capable of believing Trump has never done anything wrong.
Time to grab an even larger bag of popcorn.

Maybe I wasn't very clear - I was asking what powers the House and Senate have, i.e. how does it work?

What powers the House and Senate have? I think that would stretch to several volumes.

So can *anyone* tell me the difference between the House and the Senate? Like, in a nutshell? I don't need to know everything they do, just the extent of their different powers. Like the difference between the Commons and the Lords.
*Drums fingers and waits for Kelly*

Of course, now Trump will use the Democrats' gains as fuel to support his assertion that they are blocking him when he fails to carry out his plans. Anything bad he can put on them now, he will. ...such is politics!

So can *anyone* tell me the difference between the House and the Senate? Like, in a nutshell? I don't need to know everything they do, just the extent of their different powers. Like the difference between the Commons and the Lords. *Drums fingers and waits for Kelly* Sorry....I hadn't seen this. Basically, the House holds the power of the purse. They control all revenue and spending questions. They also have the power to investigate, including the power to subpoena, which, amongst federal agencies, is unquestioned. All 'ways and means' (appropriation) bills must start in the House. All impeachment proceedings must start in the House, as well. The Senate is the other half in that they hold the power of 'advice and consent'; they can approve or disapprove of executive appointments. The Senate tries whomever the House impeaches. Note that members of the judiciary may also be impeached and tried by Congress. Other than that, either chamber can initiate legislation, but requires approval of the other chamber and the executive to be signed in to law. Under current structuring, the House can investigate any damned thing they find worthy of investigation and either release or not release the information to the public. But, if they are to impeach, then it will not be successful in removing the impeached official unless the Senate convicts. Since impeachments tend to be more political than legal, such an outcome is pretty unlikely at this point, as impeaching would require a significant number of Senators to abandon their own party to convict, and thereby remove, the impeached official. The wild card in all this is what Mueller is holding in his hand.... Does he have enough information in hand to impeach any official and then to convince enough Republican senators to convict? How damning will the information need to be? How convincing will Mueller need to be? Is that helpful, Juju?

Anything bad he can put on them now, he will. ...such is politics! Yes, Nancy Pelosi will be personally responsible for blocking the promised major 10% tax cut for middle class Americans. Because the House Democrats refuse to play along with the Trump agenda, they are responsible for anything negative which occurs. Anything.

I suspect that Mueller will have prepared for that eventuality. I suspect that what has been heretofore an exceedingly tight security perimeter around the investigation will begin leaking precipitously.

Is it possible Mueller is ready to start whenever and on any solid movement towards him can start proceedings? Could just be building his hand while those outside do not know what he has ready.

I'm still catching up with events as they happen. The whole dismissal of Sessions and the appointment of a prejudiced lapdog crony from outside the DoJ as the new acting AG is momentous. This is verging on 'Saturday Night Massacre' status. This looks bad. Like 'constitutional crisis' bad. Stand by. Um...the best overview I've seen is Rachel Maddow's coverage. (Note that there is a high-falutin' legalese opinion floating from the ultra-conservative team [including Kellyanne Conway's hubby] claiming that the president's actions are 'unconstitutional'. So, we KNOW that there is a source, inside the White House, with the ear of the president, who is capable of telling him that what he is doing is 'crisis-inducing'. And yet, he does it.) :noid: Can you say 'drama queen'?

Why would anyone want to see Kelly's tax returns? Who knows what he might have been up to! Tax returns are not the interesting part of my life. If it weren't for the property I inherited from my wife, I'd be a 1040 Short Form guy. I'm pretty boring debt-wise, too. I own my property outright and have no loans or lines of credit on it. I just paid off my credit card. But for what goes on inside my head, I'm pretty much a snooze-job. A big job snooze job.
