Has anyone here ever done it? I read that lots of parents now feel obliged to hand out chocolates and a written apology to passengers on the plane when they are travelling with a baby. Do crying babies make people that angry one has to apologise beforehand?

I've never heard of apologizing for a crying baby! If it happens, people just need to be a bit more compassionate. It's not like the parents are pinching the baby to make it cry!
Discretely nursing a baby is going to help, especially when the air pressure changes at take off and landing.

When I flew to Japan, a couple with baby was also on board. Sure, the baby cried sometimes, but I felt the baby held up really well. There were special seats with a crib for them too. For you it's only a 2 hour flight or so, right? People shouldn't complain over that. You may want to buy earplugs for babies though.

Nb not earplugs to hand out to others but a set for your son. It may help

A crying baby wouldn't bother me personally. A toddler screaming and running amok without check might.

No, I don't think handing out chocolates beforehand is appropriate. It would be rewarding bad behaviour - their bad behaviour in being self-centered and intolerant.

Baby Miss JoeP flew business class to South Africa at the age of 5 months. At the end of the flight we got some comments on how good she had been. Which probably represents some evidence that people expected worse, but we wouldn't have felt guilty either way.
Passengers of other ages can be much more annoying.

Passengers of other ages can be much more annoying. That's a valid point.

I don't see why handing out chocolates is inappropriate - it breaks the ice. It is not necessary though.

No, it's not, but feeling obliged to hand out chocolates is unnecessary.

There are lots of people on a plane though. That's a lot of chocolate to bring along with all the other stuff a baby needs... Besides, more annoying than a crying baby is the guy in front of you flattening his seat when you already don't have any leg room. Sitting cramped for an hour and a half at least is far more detrimental to my mood than a crying baby I can shut out by using the provided headphones.

I think the people who do the chocolate thing only do it for the people immediately around them. Though again, I'd not personally expect it

I wish the people immediately around me had chocolates!

I could use that too. People can be impatient. There are so many that are not kid friendly. How has the trip went.

Well, he cried a bit on all the flights, but nobody actually complained or made any comments or even just tried to kill us with an evil stare. We did our best to calm the little one down and maybe that helped as well, that we were obviously doing something about the crying,at least trying to. Plus, I ended up worrying more about how Malcolm was feeling than about anyone being angry. And no, we didn't bring chocolates for the other passengers.
