Well Steve should have.
A comedian named Freddie Starr has just died. Freddie Star's most famous - infamous - moment came sometime back in the eighties when a tabloid newspaper posted a front page story entitled 'Freddie Starr ate my hamster.'

Of course, how could I have forgotten a newspaper headline from 30 years ago 😉

Well I dunno Steve - it is one of the most iconic tabloid headlines ever you know (along with 'it was the Sun wot won it' and that shitty racist one about football when we played Germany a zillion years ago).

The thing is - I don't remember seeing the headline at the time but it is extremely famous

Did he really eat a live hamster? No, it was a story made up by the tycoon, Max Clifford. Well I dunno Steve - it is one of the most iconic tabloid headlines ever you know (along with 'it was the Sun wot won it' and that shitty racist one about football when we played Germany a zillion years ago). I don't remember any of those headlines. I don't have a particularly good memory. But I do remember the infamous Daily Mail headline that gave the Liberals 4,000 votes and won them the Orpington by election in 1962.

My favourite headline was, 'Ambulance strikes snowball', which was about the increasing number of ambulance drivers going on strike. The web seems blissfully unaware of that headline however, so perhaps I dreamt it.

If the web's not aware of it, it must not have happened.

I used to use ambiguous headlines in my ESL classes. My favourite: "Eye Drops off Shelf". Here are some funny ones (if a little raw.) headlines

ROFL!! Brilliant Bill Bryson quoted a good one from a local paper in one of his books: Woman, 80, dies.

I'm still wondering when the authorities are going to catch up with that Florida man.
