I do remember my parents often reminding us to keep doors closed and to switch off lights in the rooms we were not using.

Pat's family kept the doors open, my family kept them closed. We had to work this one out and the compromise was to not be too strict with the children (keep them closed when you can justify it to your children but don't complain when it's not really necessary).
