Hey....Fellow posters!
Watch out for that inquiry asking if you'd like to rid your favorite fora of annoying banner ads. I stumbled across it whilst jumping from one fora to another and clicked on it...
What I got really, really ticked me off. It was a plea to 'subscribe', at a cost of $6 US per month, to remove the banner ads from EF. I assume that this would be for my usage only and all the other EF posters would have to ante up their equivalent of $6 US in order to be rid of annoying banner ads.
This kind of scam urges me to suggest that the list owners and operators might want to start looking for another source. These people are jamming banner ads into the fora and then trying to use that to generate income. Screw that. Yahoo! Groups was, at one time, even forcing adverts into the body of each and every post. I think a major upheaval and massive loss of users finally forced them to dial it back to a banner per page, rather than per post.

$6 is a bit steep.

I also have removed the adverts and the space they occupy. If they were not in such intrusive places and for such annoying products, I would not feel the need.
I honestly would not mind well-placed adverts, but when all they do is annoy me and slow down my computer, they have to go!
I realise that sites often need to generate income to stay running and I have no problem with that, but I hate the level of intrusion they generate. I also strongly detest the fact that they use these cross-linking advertising companies that try to monitor which sites you visit and start creating what they believe are adverts tailored for you. Either that, or (as in the case of YouTube) ram the same advert in front of you over and over and over and over and...
My computer currently "idles" at around 40% CPU because of the stuff I have open. As soon as adverts and so on are turned on on on web pages it just chokes and stops, preventing me from doing anything useful. That is just totally unacceptable and I do what I have to to make it work again!

If you were to subscribe $6 per month, it would apply to all users, not just to yourself. The Admin panel would recognise you as the person who donated the money to make it ad-free, so we could all say what a good chap you were. The forum would be ad-free only for the first 50,000 pages of every month unless someone else chipped in with another $6 per month. (I suspect we probably display about 50,000 pages between us.)
