I was surprised today to find out that someone at work had not seen a great stream of major films such as Alien, Ghostbusters, Casablanca. While I understand that certain films will not be to everybody's tastes, I always have assumed that some films are just well made enough that people will have seen them at some point or other.
History is being destroyed! It's game over, man!

The problem is every year there are more films to add to the list as film history gets longer. You can't expect everybody to watch every film.

I wouldn't be surprised if the list of films that all of us (regular posters) have seen would be quite short.
We should test that out ... nominations for films that there's a chance everyone has seen, please, here! Then we could do some kind of survey, like, I don't know, a poll
Alien and all its se/prequels, Ghostbusters, Casablanca, Stars Wars 4-6 and 1-3; all the Star Trek films, TLOTR 1-3, The Hobbit Spaceballs (hello Miisa!) Indiana Jones and the Franchise of Films Ben Hur (used to be on every Christmas in the UK) Gone with the Wind Titanic ET Close Encounters Harry Potter and the Series of Movies Jaws Jurassic Park etc You Only See James Bond Twice The Shawshank Redemption Rear Window
... I could probably go on.
I'm consciously excluding horror, and less widely shown sf like Forbidden Planet

I volunteer to collate the list of nominations and post the poll .., assuming a reasonable level of interest shown

I haven't seen most of those Disney ones. I have seen the Godfather but not the sequels. Haven't seen Spaceballs, Ben Hur or Close Encounters or Rear Window - is that movie supposed to be watched by everyone? Oh the Jurassic Park films, haven't seen those either. So they can all go off the list.

Oh haven't seen all the Harry Potter flicks either so you can scratch that one off the list.
On facebook there was a list of 100 movies you should see and I had done like 30-40 of them I think.
You could put King Kong (the original) perhaps. Oh and Grease.

I have not seen King Kong or Grease in their entirety.

I've seen everything mentioned so far, except for Deathly Hallows II and the most recent Star Trek, Something Darkness or whatever.
ETA: I missed the prequels/sequels to Alien. Haven't seen them, either.

I think, as usual, I am just an exception to the rule. Out of what has been mentioned so far...
YES... Alien and all its se/prequels (not yet Prometheus), Ghostbusters, Casablanca, Star Wars 1-6; all the Star Trek films (except InTo DaRkNeSs), TLOTR 1-3, The Hobbit, Spaceballs, Indiana Jones (Except Crystal Skull), Ben Hur, Gone with the Wind, Titanic, ET, Close Encounters, Harry Potter, Jaws, Jurassic Park, All the James Bond Films (Except Daniel Craig's ones, which I have found dull and tedious), Rear Window, Forbidden Planet, The Wizard of Oz, The Matrix, The Godfather, Bambi, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Snow White, Toy Story, 101 Dalmatians, Life of Brian, Grease, Titanic, Princess Bride, Holy Grail
NO... The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction
-- Just the other day, I was looking for a DVD of Rififi as I've heard mention of it as a classic film (It is cited as being the inspiration of many films, including Ocean's 11, but is not generally known).
I will watch most things, even if only to put them on the "never watch this again" list. I've even watched hideously chick-flick films such as Runaway Bride and Dirty Dancing (though that took about 6 attempts to see it end to end without falling, due to brain overload).

I've only seen one LOTR, I think it was the last one. I've only seen Alien and not any of the sequels or prequels. And I haven't seen The Hobbit, Spaceballs, Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, Rear Window, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Princess Bride or The Holy Grail.

I haven't seen any of the Stars Wars movie and the Star Trek films (watched some Star Trek TV series), Ben Hur, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, ET, Close Encounters, Harry Potter (none of them), Bambi, etc.
Rear Window is one of my all time favorites, it's a must see.

We're watching one of the Harry Potter ones now. We think it's the Half Blood Prince as he picked up a book which was owned by the Half Blood Prince.
Batman? Superman?

Haven't seen either of those.
The Harry Potter flicks are sooo loooooong and a lot of boring stuff amongst some interesting stuff.

I've never seen The Godfather,I don't remember seeing any of the Star Wars movies all the way through, and I've hardly seen any Bond ones.
I can't think of any new nominations but I reckon it has to be something like ET, Wizard of Oz or Jurassic Park.
