I should go see it when it's in the cinema, but I am in the middle of the book (I left the book back in Taiwan). So am not sure whether to wait till I finish the book or not? Maybe I should wait. But this is definitely a movie to be seen on the big screen. Oh well...

I loved the book! But I didn't like any of his other ones. I don't go to many movies, but I might go to that one.

No, it's about a guy and a tiger in a boat.

I knew it wasn't about mathematics because a certain Moose recommended it to me.

I saw the trailer for it when we went to see Skyfall and it didn't tempt me in the slightest. Looked rather silly. I haven't read the book though and I always heard about it, but after seeing the trailer for the movie I'm no longer interested in the book either.

Is this about mathematics ? Unfortunately, no.

I just read a bit more about it, apparently it's all about religion and spirituality. No wonder the trailer did not appeal to me at all.

It isn't about religion and spirituality .. not sure where you got that from.
I enjoyed the book

I want to see it on the big screen so that the tiger will be bigger than it will be if I wait and rent it. I'll go with you, Chuck!

I enjoyed the book too, but it does have a lot to do with religion and spirituality. Pi's quest to know God has him trying out Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. That's pretty much the core of the book, philosophically. The rest is a fun adventure story about being on a raft with a very large Bengal tiger.

The spiritual side only takes up a bit of the start tho. I find the bit on the raft much more interesting

...yet much more accurate!

When I even try to think of how they calculate the value of Pi, I feel like my head is going to explode. The Egyptian found it in 26 century BC! The Chinese in 5 AC. I feel stupid.

It's not actually that complicated, it's all based around a formula that gets more accurate the more times you refine it. If you take a number of easily measurable shapes with the same distance from the centre to the corners and keep adding more sides, you will find that the more sides you add, the nearer to a circle it becomes... a circle being a regular shape with an infinite number of edges.

I can visualize it, but to calculate it... Is just beyond me. I was quite good with geometry while in junior high school (around 12), then one day I just snapped with probability, and never recover from the math trauma

I read a review about the movie, maybe they play it up more than in the book. Anyway, it didn't appeal. I certainly will not waste money on it.

I rather like the illustration of how to drill a square hole.
