I always thought it referred to the desolation that Smaug made around him. Yes. You are correct. 'The Desolation of Smaug' is the location where Smaug has burned away everything; the desolation which Smaug has created.

Really? Not until the scripted comment in the storyline, eh?

I haven't seen the film. The line does seem familiar though and is presumably taken from the book so I should have thought of it. Now it seems completely obvious.
I had the same with Lord of the Rings though - never occured to me it was referring to Sauron until they get to Rivendell and one of the hobbits shouts out to Frodo that he's the Lord of the Rings and Gandalf hushes him saying there is only one LOTR. Of course it was my first read so I wasn't familiar with the story either and I was also only 14 or so at the time.

I watched it today. While I agree that "The Hobbit" trilogy is turning into more episodes 1-3 of LoTR than The Hobbit itself, I found it quite enjoyable. With the caveat that there are only so many elf/orc fight scenes I can sit through before they feel gratuitous.
I have never read The Simarillion or other works (which Jackson apparently does not have the rights to, so can't actually turn into movie form unless the events were also mentioned in footnotes of LoTR, to which he does have full rights), and have been led to believe they are heavy reads, so am glad to get a fleshed-out history of pre-LoTR happenings that were not in The Hobbit.
Visually completely amazing. I will likely watch it again once it is out on DVD, should be out and even cheap by the time of the last film next Christmas.

Which one is he? One of the dwarves, I presume?
ETA: Oh...no, the Elven king. Yeah, he is most definitely a slave to fashion. No doubt.
Wait...you've seen it? Or just trailers?

Thandruil's eyebrows scare me. I may be imagining it, but I think I remember them being commented on in the film.
