I'm very sorry to hear that, Mari. And angry. I hate people stealing bikes.

959 114 Hahaha, no Genie. It's just that there are many bikes in this country and they are stolen a lot too. Since for a lot of people it's their main source of transport I guess it has just grown this way. Just like you can insure just about anything, but insuring your bike is dirt cheap and usually worth it. In this case it most certainly is.

Insuring a bike in the UK used to be very expensive, like 10% of the cost of the bike per year. It probably still is.

My home insurance has an option for covering a bicycle, but the extra premiums outweigh the cost of just buying a new bike for the frequency of times it would normally happen here.
My solution is to ride my 21 year old bike that almost no-one would want to steal.

959 111 I paid like 25 euros for 5 years or something like that. As I said, dirt cheap. Cheaper than insuring my tablet, which would cost me 20 euros for 3 months and then 5 euros per month

959 110 Who would pay that kind of money to have their tablets insured?

Someone who is likely to have their's stolen or, I suspect it also covers accidental damage.

959 108 We have our cars and house insured, both me and my husband have life insurance; but I bought mine because the insurance agent is a relative.

We take out insurance because an accident could cause serious hardship or even ruin us.

959 104 Insurance can let us down sometimes. I recently forgot to get my car MOTd and that meant I was uninsured Had I had an accident on the motorway, it could have been very expensive and the insurance company would probably not have paid up even though the car subsequently passed its MOT without a problem.

We had our posessions in our flat insured after there'd been a fire in my parent's house. The insurance covered everything they had lost.

Not to mention you'd have been driving illegally at that point, having no MOT.

For those not in the UK the MOT (Ministry of Transport) is a test applied to cars over three years to ensure that they are mechanically sound and the emissions are at an acceptable level: we don't have such a thing in Mordor, we take pride in making our machinery go on working regardless of the pollution levels ...

959 096 A car just over its MOT is unlikely to have a catastrophic failure but, these days, they have the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Reader) cameras, linked to the PNC (Police National Computer) system, which has a list of MOT and Insurance details and can flag up your car, just by driving past a police car, who would pull you over and give you an instant fine, or worse. These days, they would be also very likely to impound your car, too. *Slap wrist* Don't do it again!

I watch quite a few of those programmes. One of my favourites is to watch Road Wars[i/] and try to guess where they are as quickly as possible when they are in Reading. In one episode they went past my estate and another they went past on the motorway.
I was watching one episode of one of those programmes one day with Tracy and she suddenly realised that they were about to go past her mum's house in Sheffield... they never made it and crashed about 100m short!

I've seen Road Wars and on that programme they only impound cars when they have good cause, that is when they have good reason to believe the car will fail. One can legally drive a car without an MOT if it is being driven to a garage for a prebooked MOT, and that sort of thing can be arranged on the spot. (I believe that would also ensure it was insured.) Anyway, cars that are impounded can be reclaimed on payment of a fine. It's no big deal (although certainly unwelcome). Being involved in an accident that causes the other driver to claim a million pounds in damages thereby requiring you to sell your house is a big deal, and that was the point I was making.

Yes, that would be a very bad thing to happen, but I was working on the principle of you not having a catastrophic accident. There has been a recent crack-down by the police on uninsured drivers and cars without MOTs. I have seen them on many occasions impound perfectly functional cars for that reason. You also have to have pre-booked the MOT before heading out on your journey, or you could just book one when you got caught.
