The breeder just visited today to confirm what we had been hoping, Echo is definitely pregnant. She is due in about four weeks, so is five weeks in and already has a tummmy that shows, so likely a larger litter than average. Yay for Echo's impending mummyness and for me not having to be the one to care for them!

Is Echo over her uncomfortable stage? And/or still more snuggly than usual?

Not uncomfortable/sick any more, and a little snugglier than usual, but more noticeable is the sleepiness. Not too fussed about going out at all, especially when it's cold. Seems to say "Nah, you go, I'll stay on the sofa".

The puppies will not be with me at all, Echo will go to the breeder's in three weeks' time and stay there until the pups are seven weeks (they cannot be separated from her until then by the Kennel Club rules), so a couple of months. But will come and visit her/them!

Do you get half the proceeds?

Poor woofer! It's stressful enough for a dog to have a first litter, but to have to do it away from home has to be pretty hard...

Should we run a sweepstake on the size of litter?

Do you get half the proceeds? No, Echo was bought under a breeding agreement, so I paid only half the price of her and the breeder maintains the right to breed from her once or until she is three years old, whichever happens first. Poor woofer! It's stressful enough for a dog to have a first litter, but to have to do it away from home has to be pretty hard... Actually, she is pretty comfy at the breeders; as I have a male also she has stayed there a few times before when she was in heat, plus her sister lives there, they are besties.

That's good! I'd hate to think of her in a strange place giving birth..

I'd hate to think of her in a strange place giving birth.. Like having to go into hospital for your first child, Kye?

Um, probably, though I don't know quite when I will get to the breeder's to see them, she lives fairly far away.

Yay for puppies! How old is she now?
I think for humans it's easier since we know what is going on and can make the choice of hospital or home birth.

She is almost two.
Getting rather round already, with three weeks to go. All of the initial discomfort appears to be gone and is now again the first one in the kitchen at the mere hint of food.

She has gone from 6 kg to 8 kg and change, an increase like that of one's weight in two months might be tiring

Do they know how many puppies are in there?

Not yet, we could't find a good time for an x-ray yet. But the breeder will have one taken, to ensure she knows they have all come out. Usually 3-5, initially we though more when she got very big in the beginning, but hasn't grown as much now. So I would guess 5.

Ah, she looks drowsy. Which breed is she? Here puppies have to be 8 weeks old when they leave their mother (who probably is rather tired of them then) and kittens have to be 12 weeks. Obviously dogs develop faster than cats.

You mean, dogs stop developing sooner

She is a Border Terrier. There is a newish regulation here that the mother has to be kept with the pups until they are 7 weeks, but I am not sure has the earliest rehoming age been moved from 7 weeks to 8 or not at the same time.
At any rate, she went home with the breeder last night (a good thing too, I was afraid she was going to pop at any moment), and will be there for 8 weeks.
