World Values SurveyIt is interesting to see how different cultures/countries think about "traditional, religious vs rational, secualar" and "survival vs Self-expression". My country is extremely rational/seculare and individualistic.

Why is Malta in Latin America? It's part of Europe and should be in Catholic Europe Its position in the chart makes it hard to put it together with Catholic Europe, though I think they should have surrounded it with a green circle or something. Umm, Ireland was put together with English speaking countries actually.

And Poland is in Latin America, by any standards it should be at the heart of Catholic Europe It must be that Poland value-wise is closer to Latin America. The Philippines are also in Latin America, though geographically it is part of South Asia. Likewise Greece is Orthodox but valuewise placed in Catholic Europe.

With all due respect to the eminent people who drew this up, it seems very flawed to me

To me too. There's no way Canada is more traditional than the US!

And Poland is in Latin America, by any standards it should be at the heart of Catholic Europe I guess it simply means that, according to the study, the dominating values in Poland are similar to those found in many Latin American countries.

hmm, Islamic countries are more or less right where they should be I think. It's definitely not a very accurate study especially since it's based on questionnaires, not a direct evaluation of how people actually live. Many people like to portray themselves as traditional even when they're not. It depends on the connotations words like "traditional", "individualist", etc have in different cultures. In Morocco for example, being fervently religious or traditional is considered a good quality overall, and so people will try to portray themselves as such, even if most of what they're doing runs contrary to traditional values. One could say that they have two sets of values: one expressed in culture and verbal communication, and the other one implicit and is the one that actually governs much of their behavior.
