We're taking him to the vet tomorrow. He has diarrhea now. Still hoping he will just die tonight, but if he doesn't we will have to take him or he will suffer a slow, horrible death.

It's horrible when it comes to that stage.

Every time I see a new post on this thread I fear the worst.
But then - as you say - a long protracted painful decline is worse than a swift and painless one.

Sparky is dead. We found him early this morning and were actually relieved that he managed to die by himself and that we won't need to take him to the vet. It is sad, but it's better for him that way and that makes it easier.

Sad, but he's not in any pain now.

Poor piggy. But it's a relief not to have to worry about him any more.

I am sorry. But I do understand wanting him to die on his 'own' terms. I was actually a bit relieved when the vet told me Gandalf had not made it through the night because I knew that the alternative was having to sign papers saying he could be put to sleep. I would have done it - they'd made it fairly clear there was not much hope for him - but it was easier for both me and, I guess, him, that it did not come to it.

He was a lucky piggie to have such loving owners though

He was a lucky piggie to have such loving owners though Thanks, Jo. I think he left us in the best way that was possible under the circumstances, in his cage with Patch and in an environment where he felt safe. He was very much loved and I think we gave him a nice life.

Sparky was also the father of three of our piggies: Mr. You, Cotton and Spotty, so he made sure he left something behind. It's a nice thought.

Patch is in a cage with Spotty and Gilbert now so she won't be alone after Sparky's death. There is a bit of bickering, but generally, they seem to be ok.

It's good that they get along without fighting.
