Crime-comedy drama is obviously what it is called.
The character Evert Bäckström was created by Swedish Criminologist and writer Leif GW Persson. This Bäckström is a police detective to hate. He is fat, homophobic, rasicst and misygyn. He is not stupied but no genius either. He sometimes stumbles on new evidence, as when he returns to a murder victim's flat to steal alcohol. He is certainly not the hero or protagist of the books or series.
In the Amercian version, Lieutenant Everett Backstrom, he seems still not likeable but he is the protagonist and I think he is supposed to be smart. Some say it is Dr House as a detective but I don't think so. I think professor Persson was inspired by some real police characters when he invented poliskommissarie Evert Bäckström.
Myself I have a hard time watching a series with an unlikeable protagonist. Maybe I don't have the right humour.
