My niece has a Saturday job in a bakery, and at the end of the day the staff are allowed to bring home whatever is left over as it can't be kept till Monday. (In fact my sister was complaining about the amount of cake in the house all the time ) She also told me about her friend's son who used to work for a large supermarket (I think it was Tesco). Apparently, at the end of the day the bakery section workers were told to spray disinfectant on all the leftover cakes and bread, to deter people (presumably hungry/homeless?)from stealing them out of the skips (dumpsters). As if this weren't bad enough, her friend's son was fired for getting caught on CCTV 'stealing' - eating a cake that he was supposed to have thrown in the dumpster. Crazy.

I remember being in Tesco one Christmas and seeing a woman behind the bakery counter taking fresh loves off the pans and throwing them into a bin bag whilst saying disapprovingly 'we're throwing it away before it even gets put out.' Not her fault of course and I could tell that she was annoyed by it but I know tat their staff are not allowed to take anything home. The disinfectant thing is just petty though. That food could feel a lot of people. There is a homeless shelter being built in my town - why on earth can't someone go over to Tesco each night from there and take the stuff that has not been sold? Who does tat hurt?

Even stranger, my local Tesco - I assume that it's not alone - collects for the food bank - paying customer's donations only of course. They wouldn't NEED paying customer's to donate if they gave freely their leftovers!

It seems to be more or less the same here in Germany. Even taking food from the big skips is stealing. Some people do it anyway, but often enough it is sprayed with stuff so it can't be consumed. I hate that and we usually try not to waste food at home. It used to really upset my mother if we had to throw food away and now I understand why. I could cry when I think about how much is thrown away while people are starving elsewhere.

Yeah.Given the profit the supermarkets make why can't it go to ppl in need?
Marks and Spencer btw, DO let their staff take leftovers and are happy for any other to go to the needy. My mum used to do a run twice a week to take food from there to families who were desperate
