Another black church burnt down (the seventh in two weeks) after yet another mass shooting. Now all the negative reaction to same sex marriage. From the outside, it looks like the US is becoming increasingly polarised - or is it just the way the media is telling it?

I was wondering too... from the outside it does look really pretty bad. I do not know if this is just the work of random loonies or something that is more entrenched in US society.

It's not random loonies. It's racist loonies. They are probably burning the churches down in reaction to the state governments removing the confederate flags. As for the whiny republican evangelical reaction to gay marriage, it is whiny republican evangelicals being whiny republican evangelicals. They will have to get over it.

I did not realise that there were so many people out there intent on burning churches down.
No-one seems to have asked what seems to me to be the obvious question, though, which is...what, in the name of a loving, merciful and un-racially biased God, is a BLACK church?

We don't have black churches in Marple.

People like to worship with the ones who look and act like themselves. Human nature...
I'm happy with my mixed congregation. We're about half and half West Indian and North American. But it's not as common as we would like.

Ah Karla I was just, in fact, thinking about this thread and about you and about the fact that you had said that there was a large W Indian contingent at your church and then I glanced down and saw that you had replied I guess that it's not as easy as saying ' people should worship in a mixed way' because you are right, people like to worship with those like themselves. And I guess too that it's not just (or even mainly) a case of predominantly 'white' churches deciding that they do not want black members or vice versa; I'd like to hope that that does not exist anymore. Nonetheless I think that if Jesus was who He claimed to be this would not be what he wished (um the segregation I mean)

In my church people are happy to have newcomers, whatever colour they are. But they tend to socialize and work with people of the same background. It's more culture than colour though. There's a big cultural difference in our West Indian community, most of whom are first generation Canadians.

It's also probably to do with denominations. Just like the RC cathedral in my home town was overwhelmingly Irish (with some Italian and Polish), certain denominations are mostly made up from a particular group. Here, Pentecostal churches can be majority black.

Pentecostal churches here are white but only I think because everyone is white here ;P.

I seriously doubt that you guys have to worry about racism like America does anyway. Black vs white Yada Yada bullshit. Wish people would hurry and mix.

I think it is far less prevalent than portrayed in the media. Sensationalism sells and keeps viewers watching. Now, with that said, these sorts of things are still going on and while they are the exception, not the rule, these horrific acts backed by racist, bigoted, murderous sentiments nevertheless are on the rise. I have my own views on why, but nonetheless, they are a blotch on American society.
