Here you have minimum youth wages which depend on age, till you reach 23. From 23 years old, everyone has the same minimum wage: 8,70 euros per hour. That's about 9,55 dollars. We do have paid holiday leave etc. though and people on minimum wage get extra help from the government in the form of tax refunds and rent & care subsidies/benefits. All benefits here are income dependent. The more you earn, the less you get. I get nothing now, but I've received my fair share when I was a student and with my first part time job.

Same here. We had tax credits when we weren't earning much, but we're over the threshold for that now.

Just to be clear, tax credits are a reduction in the amount of tax you have to pay? So, if you are earning too little to pay tax, they don't help you.

No, tax credits are a type of means tested top-up benefit for working families based on income. It gets paid into your bank account on a monthly basis: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/in-work-or-looking-for-work/benefits-and-tax-credits-for-people-in-work/This government want to phase it out in favour of 'universal credit', which from what I can gather is going to make many people worse off, surprise surprise. :/

The minimum wage in the UK is £6.50 ($10 per hour) and is soon to rise to £7.20 ($11 per hour) for the over 25s. But workers also have statutory paid holidays, which effectively pushes up the minimum wage by about 10% when calculated over the year. So from September, workers in the UK over 25 years of age will have an effective minimum wage of about $12 per hour compared with America's $7.25. Well, I know there is a movement here in the states to raise our minimum wage to $15 an hour. Not sure if there is a similar movement in the UK for a significant hike or whether $11 or $12 an hour in the UK is a living wage.
