After reading in the paper about Helena who had to put her harness racing horse down due to leg problems: "I wanted to make sure her last time was good and that she would not be afraid. I know a meat farmer, so the meat could be taken care of. And I don't see what the fuss is about, a hundred years ago everybody would have found it self-evident." She has now eaten of the horse's meat for seven months and family and friends also find the meat delicious, although they were reluctant at first.
I don't mind eating horse meat (but race horses may have a lot of medicine in them). Not eating horse meat seems such a waste of good meat. But my own horse? It would be like eating my own dog.

I would eat horse meat - though it's not commonly done here - but no, not my own.

Never ever ever. Ever. Horses aren't food, they are transportation. Eating a horse is like eating a car or a bicycle. Nope.

I eat horse in sausages all the time, and have no problem with that. But would have trouble if it was one I knew.

I don't eat red meat anyway. And I think I'll be giving up chicken in the new year so the question doesn't apply.
I do think horses come under the classification of 'companion animals' though, so I'm not surprised people don't like the thought of eating them.

I've never owned a horse and never will but I've eaten horse and I'd eat it again given the chance.
Frankly, if push comes to shove, I'll eat anything that's got nutrition. I don't understand all this squeamishness about food.

I would never eat my own horse, if I had one, but I would love to try horse meat in general (never had it before). Never ever ever. Ever. Horses aren't food, they are transportation. Eating a horse is like eating a car or a bicycle. Nope. But then you're missing the chance to be godzilla.

I've eaten horse meat. I would be reluctant to eat my own horse, but if needs must I would.

People who have eaten horse meat say it's comparable to steak.

steak is surely a generic term? Do you mean beef steak?

I agree with her sentiment that we should be eating meat from animals that have had a happy life, just not specifically your own friend.

Ate horse once on holiday in the sixties. Belgium or France, not sure.
