We watched a report on the Channel Four news about this camp earlier. It looked completely appalling .. I cannot imagine being forced to live in a place like that. Granted, I am aware that a certain percentage of the people there are holding out to get illegally in to the UK when it might be better for them to claim asylum in any country that would be prepared to help them but still it was dreadful to see children and pregnant women living in such horrendous conditions. And apparently the French government are about to start clearing it. What happens now?

France has an excellent and enviable record in treating asylum seekers. They are in a safe country.

They are not in a safe place though. And I can't really blame people for wanting to be with family members.

Those are the choices people make - no point in complaining about them

I can understand why they would though. You and I are lucky Alan, as is everyone posting here. We're living in a safe place. We have homes to go to. To some extent I have been rethinking my views about immigration recently because I think that some of the fears about it are potentially justified. But I feel for those who just genuinely want to live in peace and raise their families in peace and without violence. There's also the fact that France alone should not have to shoulder all of that responsibility - nor should any one country. A lot of countries are taking a good deal more of the burden than the UK is.
