This is quite easy really,* all you have to do is to connect Edward White Benson (Archbishop of Canterbury) to Johnny Depp (Actor). The tricky bit is getting from Canterbury to Oxford and then on to Wonderland. You may like to try working backwards but either way works.
* The use of the word easy in this sentence may not be completely conventional.

Yes, but a different one ... EWB met Queen Victoria quite a lot and, happen, young Depp has bumped into QE2.
OK first clue: step one is from E.W. Benson to his son, A.C. Benson, a noted academic and author in his day and Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The next step will get you to Oxford from Cambridge if you can work it out ...

Well getting from Oxford to Cambridge is not that difficult surely but there are lots ofroutes.

Benson presumably used scissors occasionally and to use them he would have to hold them in one of his hands: hence, Edward Scissorhands who was famously played by Johnny Depp. That was too easy!

Ingenious ... but it still does not get you beyond Arthur Benson ... Well getting from Oxford to Cambridge is not that difficult surely but there are lots ofroutes. Apparently Network Rail want to reinstate the railway line between the two university towns ... still does not help you beyond Arthur Benson though ... ... is anyone going to take up the Wonderland part of the clue?

I suppose that it can only be Lewis Caroll, and Depp was in Alice recently Excellent ... that's step seven: Depp played the Mad Hatter in the 2010 film and the Mad Hatter did, indeed, meet an Alice (which is step six). Working out which Alice will give you step five.

Tangentially related: I learned that you can go to Google and type in <celebrity name> bacon number, and it will give you the degrees of separation between that person and Kevin Bacon. Likewise, you can also get their Erdös number. Article here. Depp's Bacon number is 2, btw. Though I couldn't find a number for Benson.

Cooper? *looks vaguely defeated* *collapses in giggles* Though I couldn't find a number for Benson. It's alright I am better now ... well Benson was alive 'Hollywood' was an ares of underdeveloped scrubland going cheap to anyone who wanted to start up a new industry ... What a shame Karen is not around, never mind: I will post the solution this evening. Eight hours to go.

My friend Carolyn is from Springfield. She met Brad Pitt at a party in high school. He was in a movie with Kevin Bacon. So my Bacon number is 3.

SO here we are - the Answer.
Edward White Benson was ABC 1883-1897.
One of his sons was Arthur Benson who was part of a circle of gay Anglican academics which is how he came to meet:
Henry Liddell ... they were more than friends *coughs*
Henry had a little sister called Alice who had a story made up for her by Charles Dodgson.
Alice in Wonderland
2010 Film included Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
There is a question about how many steps this really is - it depends on whether you think that Alice Liddell was the Alice who went to Wonderland, Dodgson says she wasn't but some argue that he was being evasive in his answer. Dodgson photographed all sorts of people at a very good standard, the photo of AC Benson is remarkably intense, and the protrait of Arthur Liddell makes his 'manly beauty' very apparent indeed ...

My friend Carolyn is from Springfield. She met Brad Pitt at a party in high school. He was in a movie with Kevin Bacon. So my Bacon number is 3. Thus, any of us who might have met you then would have a Bacon number of 4 (at worst). Mine is already 4 as a friend met Anthony Hopkins at an acting clinic. Hopkins number is also 2 as he worked with Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black, and Pitt and Bacon were in Sleepers together.

My brother was in the NYT with Kate Winslet's sister - and actually met Kate herself whilst here - so I guess he has only a small step to get to most Hollywood peeps

Kate Winslet's Bacon number is 2 Kate Winslet and Michael Shannon appeared in Revolutionary Road. Michael Shannon and Kevin Bacon appeared in The Woodsman. That means we must all be low numbers just by knowing the Moose! Me->Moose->Brother->Sister->Shannon->Winslet->Bacon=6. (Or 5 if you don't count the sister. Don't think "met" is a valid link though. )
