Mr Khan, a former Labour cabinet minister, became Britain’s most powerful Muslim politician when he defeated the Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith by a landslide. He gained more than 1.1 million votes, the single largest mandate for any individual politician in British history.
The Conservatives’ tactic of accusing Mr Khan of “legitimising” extremist views failed to win over voters in the capital, and was described as a “vile smear” by the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

But not the first in Europe:
Following the election of Sadiq Khan as Mayor of London, many have been praising the result as a sign of the city's positive attitude to multiculturalism.
However, London is not the first major European city to have appointed a Muslim mayor: that honour goes to Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The city appointed Moroccan-born Ahmed Aboutaleb, pictured above, in October 2008, a role he holds to this day.

I wonder what, if anything, this will mean in London. I read that Khan is EU-friendly. Also that he is the son of a bus drive while Zac Goldsmith is the son of a billionaire.
The former prime minister of Sweden pointed out that under a Trump presidency Khan would be banned from visiting - unless his policy on banning Islam changes.
Do they fear he will introduce sharia in London?
Mr Khan’s election received a hostile response from some in the US, where the influential Drudge Report website described him as the “First Muslim Mayor Of Londonistan” and he was called “an Islamist” by one major TV network.
