a European style spread, if anyone is feeling peckish. I have a French stick, fresh butter, goat's cheese, cooked sausage, brioche rolls and balsamic vinegar. Tuck in.

I am in fact at the moment eating a croissant aux amandes. Much tastier than the virtual variety!

I had a croissant and a pain au chocolat today. And an ice cream. I'm officially fasting tomorrow.

Any special reason for fasting?

Probably for dietary reasons

Yep, Mari's right --although my resolution didn't last very long...

Isn't fasting a bit extreme?

I suspect she wasn't being quite literal

Moose is right. Hyperbole only.

I will have to look up what pain au chocolate is...

I will have to look up what pain au chocolate is... Usually, it's a croissant made with chocolate folded in to the center. Very tasty. The chocolate folded in can vary greatly in darkness. And, of course, a true French chocolate would have a hint of hazelnut, as well.

I am in fact at the moment eating a croissant aux amandes. Much tastier than the virtual variety! Mmmmm...Did it have the sprinkling of powdered sugar?

I think I've spoken of it before, but my neighborhood has a rillyrilly decent boulangerie/patissarie/cafe in 'Petite Provence', so I can get ahold of wonderous things like you guys are describing. The one I've come to savor is the 'strawberry flower' (fraise fluers?)...yet another derivation of the croissant, this one with multiple dabs of strawberry goo.

Croissants are, to me, a different shape. But the pastry is essentially similar.

Yes...The same pastry in several different guises. The crescent shape is generally plain and the added flavor variations have shape variations.
I wish I could sample one of everything, but I have neither the time, money, nor intestinal space to accommodate.

I only know it as croissants and pain au chocolat .. things like Danishes are different.

Well, here's a pic of the top rack at Petite Provence patisserie.... Everything you see there is based upon croissant dough. The cake-like confections are in the enclosed case below.

I've tried things that look like some of those but they taste totally different to croissants to me. It might be the fillings or toppings though.

Yes, it is the fillings/toppings. I see that my pic of the display does not have fraise fleurs....ah, well.
It's like the objective is to start with croissant dough and add any number of other tasty items to make a variety of pastries. The powdered sugar items are the almond croissants. They have that sweetened almond paste rolled up inside. Yum.

I am not keen on almonds .. they are pretty much the only type of nut I really don't like

Those pastries look pretty tasty.
When we were in Paris, we visited this one bakery which made escargots (croissant dough in a pinwheel shape with custart and raisins typically) made with pistachio and chocolate - still to this day up there as one of the top pastries I ever did eat. Mmmmmmm. I made the suggestion to the French bakery here but they haven't made them as far as I can see.
