Martial law and curfew. Turkey has a tradition of military dictatorships. But this was a total surprise. Did not Erdogan do as the military wanted, war with the Kurds again.
Not that Erdogan seems democratic. But military rule is even less democratic.
So what will happen now? No membership of EU for Turkey. And probably the visas for Turkish citizens wanting to go travel in Europe will stay. What will happen to the treaty with EU about the refugees? What will happen about the parttaking of Turkey in the Syrian war?

And it also looks like it might be the Turkish people who lose - as so often happens . I do not want to see Turkey radicalised. I doubt that the Turks do either.

Under Erdogan it's already radicalizing. He is a bit like Putin: everyone hates him except for the Russians. Every one hates Erdogan except for the Turks. The saddest part is that this coup "authorises" Erdogan to get rid of everyone he doesn't like. Before now at least he was criticized somewhat (though people criticizing him too loudly tend to end up in prison). There has been talk of Erdogan staging this coup himself to get the public back on his side after a rough couple of months. Interviewed soldiers often didn't even know there was a coup going on, they were simply following orders. It's a sad business. What really pissed me off was Erdogan telling the people to go to the places where the soldiers were to stop them from doing what they wanted. He asked his own people to be a human shield for his government. Unforgivable, though it did seem to have turned the tide of this coup.
I don't think staging a coup is good, but I'm not sure Erdogan is the better bet, elected by the people though he may be.

I had read the suggestions that he might have orchestrated this himself but it seems - at least according to our media - that that was not in fact the case. To be honest I knew little about the guy before any of this happened. Turkey has a reputation as being a liberal Islamic state - culturally and geographically half Europe and half Asia. I hope this is not going to change.

That reputation is from the 90s and 00s. Under erdogan it's becoming more and more like a dictatorship except for the fact that the people him. I wouldn't want to be a journalist or judge there right now.

Today I heard that Erdogan is having a list of something like 50,000 people arrested. How do you come up with that many people so soon after this happened? Did he orchestrate this himself so he would have an excuse to get rid of people he wants out of his way?

He probably already had a list with people he wanted to get rid of, and now he has the perfect pretext.

There are lots of creepy things happening in Turkey right now. The fraternization with Russia is one of them.

And now propaganda and revenge against Sweden. Our foreing minister Margot Wallström dared to criticize that childen 12-15 could "give consent": A news ticker at Istanbul's International Atatürk Airport displayed a message on Friday which reads, "Travel Warning! Did you know that Sweden has the highest rape rate worldwide?" The headline was taken from a report from the Turkish newspaper Güneş and it comes days after Sweden's Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom tweeted on Sunday, "Turkish decision to allow sex with children under 15 must be reversed. Children need more protection, not less, against violence, sex abuse." www.dailysabah.com/europe/2016/08/19/istanbul-airport-ad-warns-travelers-of-swedens-high-rape-rate
