I've been thinking of table decoration for my wedding and I came across a fad called mini gardening. It's basically creating a garden in a bowl or mug or other smallish space with mini-plants and decorations. I was thinking of doing a few in small vases. I can keep them in my classroom or give them away as gifts afterwards. Only mine would look more like this:

Oh that's awesome! I lack for creativity but I am seriously tempted to give this a go anyway

You could have a guest activity where they make mini gardens during the reception.

That would be fun! But alas also expensive. I already bought games at the second hand shop and enough bowls/vases for a couple of table pieces to keep the cost down.

Do you know when you're getting married yet?

Yes, March 13th. Flowers are not abundant around that time free for the picking and getting them from a florist is too expensive (plus I don't like the idea of flowers from a hothouse, possibly not even from my own country), that's why this appeals to me. Plus some mini gardens I saw on the internet are really dreamy. I love that. Not sure I can create that effect myself though.

Neat idea. :-)
Are you having games at your wedding reception?

Yes, a couple of old games like memory and dominoes for on the tables. Our reception is only 2,5 hours, so we really don't need to organise a lot.

I think we call those terraniums. Like aquarium but terra. They are nice and a nice idea! Though I always think of the Dutchlands as having very reasonably priced flowers. You could just see what's available at the market on the day.

Yes, but we are both woodsy people and both my garden and house have more green or functional flowers than pretty flowers. Really decking everything out in flowers will be rather costly still. The advantage of having bought my plants and having started my mini gardens is that I can slip them and create new plants for free. I already have 3 shoots on the go and by the time it's March, my mini gardens will have matured a bit.
The 4 I created are far less creative than some of the mini gardens I've seen, but they look cute and I like them. I hope they'll survive the next couple of months. Tomorrow I'll take one with me to school for on my desk. I just hope no one will try to be helpful and water it... >_<

Maybe the kids will all want to make one themselves. You could get them all the bring in a jar from home and make one.

That's an idea. My students were interested enough in the one I put on my desk, though I got several questions about what it is. Duh, a jar with plants in it.
