A week ago I went to the state fair with my sister. My favorite part was getting to see a printmaking demonstration by a local artist. It was absolutely fascinating to watch, and his stuff is just beautiful. I fell in love with one of his engravings and talked to him about buying a print. On Thursday visited his studio to pick up the print (I actually had to pick out the one I wanted from several - they are all slightly different because of differences in the inking process) and look at all the other stuff he has on his walls and talk to him about art. I was there for nearly an hour and it was the most wonderful thing I've done in a long time.
I'm ridiculously happy with this print and I think it's the most beautiful thing I own, so I wanted to share it with you guys and let you see it and maybe brighten your day. This is just a picture from my lousy phone camera - it's much nicer in person. :-)
I'm so glad that there are still artists making beautiful things like this, and it's really spurred me to keep going in my efforts to learn how to make art. I really want to be able to do something like this one day.
If anyone's interested, here's a video (7 minutes long) of the artist talking about his art and it gives a bit of a demonstration of the printmaking process (it leaves out the acid part, though, which is what actually cuts the lines in the plate - what he's doing with the tools is just removing the wax to expose the copper so the acid can etch it):
