I've never even heard of it, but apparently it's popular enough to be made into a tv show!
The sight filled the northern sky; the imensity of it was scarcely conceivable. As if from Heaven itself, great curtains of delicate light hung and trembled. Pale green and rose-pink, and as transparent as the most fragile fabric, and at the bottom edge a profound fiery crimson like the fires of Hell, they swung and shimmered loosely with more grace than the most skillful dancer. ~ Northern Lights
Yeah, the style is quite unusual and I found the footnotes somewhat off-putting. However what I really liked was the way magic had been woven into history in an authentic way, and the various themes (which I won't go into now because spoilers) which kind of become apparent as you go along.
If you don't manage the book, do check out the series. It's excellent.
