For some reason or other I found myself on a website reading about this yesterday, which also included live footage of what actually happened. I was about eleven at the time and did not really understand what had happened, other than that some rocket had tried to go somewhere, failed, and seven people had died (there were some rather bad taste jokes that went around about that too, which I gleefully repeated even though none of us had the faintest idea what they actually meant).
For those who remember the disaster, especially Americans, what do you recall about it? Were you watching it live? Did you realise instantly what had happened? (oddly enough the ground controller seemed to remain really very calm even after the explosion ...)
I heard a bird cry, sharp and free. My name is Jordan.

I don't remember it at all.
The sight filled the northern sky; the imensity of it was scarcely conceivable. As if from Heaven itself, great curtains of delicate light hung and trembled. Pale green and rose-pink, and as transparent as the most fragile fabric, and at the bottom edge a profound fiery crimson like the fires of Hell, they swung and shimmered loosely with more grace than the most skillful dancer. ~ Northern Lights
