Why the fuss about the firing of Comer? Surely whatever he knows would have to come out anyway in an investigation? Or do I have the wrong end of the stick?

Investigations don't just happen, they need leadership. And even when they happen, things can be covered up. The truth will not out, not for ages.
It's probably not what he already knows that matters, but what sources the investigation may or may not have been working on. I don't trust Comey anyway and I don't know how much of a loss this is.
I think the fuss is because (a) it's mindboggling how blatantly political and apparently incompetent the Trump administration is, and (b) it's mindboggling how they continue to get away with it.

I think also that civilians can't be forced to testify in investigations

He was leading the investigation. Trump fired him for investigating Trump. And who decides who Comey's replacement will be? Trump. And now Mitch McConnell says congress won't have an independent investigation.

Yes, that seems fair.

WAS he investigating Trump? Cos Trump claims that he was not

He was. Sometimes Trump tells porkies.

That's a very blatant porky to tell though... it was in the letter firing him!! Can't the guy sue or something?

Isn't that a strange thing to put in the firing letter, though? And Comey had already publically acknowledged that he was investigating Trump.

Looks like it's unravelling - isn't this tantamount to an admission?

Looks like a threat to me Yes, I read it as both. Surely even mentioning tapes - even in inverted commas - suggests there's a possibility of incriminating stuff?

With Trump, "every accusation is a confession" ((a quote, I think). He accused Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower, because that's exactly what he would do. It's quite likely he does record conversations he has. It's also quite likely he doesn't remember what was said and didn't understand it, and quite likely there's nothing incriminating.

I think it is pretty clear that anyone trying to investigate Trump or his administration will be fired. Preet Bharara tried to investigate health minister Tom Price and was fired.

I can see Steve's post now .. weird.
I really hope that this is Trump's death knell - so to speak - but who knows?

He could just resign .. it is probably something that would look better for him than impeachment, whichI suspect is going to happen

He's not going to resign while he has an 84% approval rating amongst Republicans.

With respect to American politics (or possibly all politics) I'm torn between a desire to stay informed and a desire to stay sane and relatively happy. I've been erring on the side of happy lately, I think.
Does anyone know of a relatively unbiased and non-emotive news aggregate that I can read once and a while to stay on top of things?

The Guardian has a fairly leftie bias but is pretty non-emotive. The Economist has a right-wing bias, and you can't read many articles for free, but is thoroughly non-emotive.
I also read Al Jazeera sometimes! They too have a bias - everyone does - but you can be sure of a different perspective.
