So erm... this is an interesting thread and all, but why is it stickied to the top of EVERY section?

Yeah, I know...That no one knows. I asked earlier.
It somehow became the 'motherf all threads'.
I have come to think of it as accusatory...beginning, as it does, all thread lists, everywhere, here.

One thread to rule them all, one thread to find them, One thread to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

So...I am getting the impression that that toast racks are an expression of the British not wanting their butter to melt in to the toast and render it no longer 'crispy'. The act of cooling the toast would seem to keep it harder and 'crispier' under the later application of butter/margarine, jams, preserves, marmalades, or jellies. The Brits tend to opt for 'rigid' and 'cooled' in toast presentation. Not really, toast racks stop the toast retaining moisture and becoming 'leathery' or tough to eat. We still want the butter to melt into the toast but not being leathery is more important than not being warm. Really crisp toast is unfortunate and to be avoided.

I hadn't noticed, as I tend to always view the board by "recent" (http://europeforum.freeforums.net/threads/recent), and have that as a bookmark to refresh.
Was it pinned or made an announcement? I would remove the announcement to test it, but knowing freeforums that might just delete the thread.

I would remove the announcement to test it, but knowing freeforums that might just delete the thread. I tried creating a thread with an announcement as a test. It does seem to work if you remove the announcement but like you I wouldn't trust it. So, I moved all of the posts into a new thread and that seems to have done the trick.

I suspect that if it is Sticky it will be pinned at the top of that subforum, but if it is an announcement it might go to all the subforums? But yes, good, now only visible in the one.

So...Urpform Brits.
Whilst in Wales, a local denizen there, who also posts here, recommended that I might enjoy a little travel tome by a fellow American who had spent much of his life in Europe and Britain. The tome is Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson, which recounts his retracing of his British haunts from his life amongst the quirky islanders some twenty years earlier. It is a 'farewell tour'.
So far, I am enjoying it. Largely, I think, because the author is about as dyspeptic in outlook as am I, and wry about it. I've been chuckling through several of his quips as he has stumbled across south England, but it really hits a funnybone during his visit to Oxford. I wholeheartedly agree with his American typfications of Oxford.
Of course, he relates about hiring a car in Oxford, so that hints of the idiosyncrasies of driving in England can be exposed and he proceeds to rant about the crappy architecture and the abominations imposed by misguided aesthetics upon an already dubious pile of rubble that is Oxford. I have to say that I agree with his assessment, which is something that stood out for me upon my return to Cambridge. Cambridge has done a much better job in adapting to development and preserving ambience than has Oxford...my impression.

You'd never read any Bryson before? He's fantastic Try his books on America too. I've got most of them, if I'd known I could have given them to you.

A walk in the woods is his worst, in my opinion. Even Bryson struggles to write a whole book about walking between trees for day after day. I own most of his works and I think I've read all of them.

Yay, you read it! But do catch up with all his works, they're all good. My absolute favourite is The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, all about his childhood in the Midwest of the 50s and 60s. I cried laughing. Also, his commentaries on the US are great, as is his factual historical/science stuff such as the History of Nearly Everything. You have many treats in store.

Yes, I do. I love it when I find a new author I like and they have a significant catalog of tomes for me to draw upon for additional reading. Thank you for that.
Have you read Farley Mowat? His best known is probably "Never Cry Wolf", which was made in to a passable movie. Still, the book is a scream.

Julie makes quite a habit of introducing Americans to Bill Bryson, it seems. :-)
Funny that you mention his assessment of Oxford. When I read Notes from a Small Island I was taken aback by his complaints about Oxford. It was heartening to read his more recent The Road to Little Dribbling where he said that Oxford had improved a lot since he visited it before. Since I've only been there comparatively recently, I suppose my visits came after whatever improvements were made. I think Oxford is wonderful. But I haven't been to Cambridge (yet) so I can't comment on the difference between the two.

My ex lives in Oxford (also studied at and now works at the University). He's not very complimentary about the city as a whole
