as I said on facebook, I've decided to cut down on the amount of meat I eat .. partly for ethical reasons and partly because it would probably make my colon happy; I eat a shocking amount of red meat. I plan to continue to eat fish (had a tuna sandwich for tea yesterday) but other than that I really want to cut my meat consumption down. Not had any for three days now. I miss it already

I probably wouldn't try it since it's had to do low-carb and be a vegetarian, although I've known at least one person to do it successfully. Besides I like meat.

I like meat too I am not sure my insides are all that healthy though. More veg would certainly be good.

My nutricionist used to say put a piece of meat the size of your palm on your plate and fill the rest of your plate with vegetables.

I might substitute meat for fish or some other protein source

Also, how big is a plate?

As long as you fill it with vegetables, I guess it doesn't matter!

I might substitute meat for fish or some other protein source There's that question again. For me, fish IS meat. My understanding is that when you forego meat, you need to be far more attentive to protein intake. Have you considered what your protein replacements will be? You indicated 'lacto-ovo' on FB, so that provides ready protein sources from milk and egg sources. Soy (aka tofu), legumes, and nuts are another source. Have you gone down that road yet? (I seem to remember somebody telling me that human consumption of meat provided all of a set of enzymes (amino acids?) necessary for human nutrition, but when meat was removed from the diet, one requisite enzyme (amino acid) was NOT provided unless certain alternatives were consumed in stead of meat.)

Do try the quinoa (pronounced 'keen-wa'). It is rather like a grain....cooked it tastes like a fine grained rice, kind of 'nutty'.

Yeah, I don't understand why people don't consider fish to be meat.
To get a complete protein, all you have to do is eat beans with grain, and I don't think you have to eat them both at the same time. The only two plants that have enough amino acids to make a complete protein by themselves are soybeans and quinoa. But since you're still eating milk and eggs, you don't even have to worry about that.

Every time I ramp up with legumes, I end up encouraging a transient anti-social period while my body adjusts to all the extra fiber.

Kale and broccoli and to a certain extent cauliflower give me stomach pains. I can do without the kale, but I don't like doing without the others.

I've never been a broccoli fan, so I avoid it. Kale is new to me and, so far, okay for sandwich foliage. I love me some cauliflower and love is both raw and steamed.
I like brussels sprouts, too, but have problems with cabbage, which can inflate. I like cooked spinach, too, but I must have vinegar as a condiment for it.
Beetroot can color your excretions and asparagus can impart a 'funny' smell to your urine.

Yeah, I don't understand why people don't consider fish to be meat. I think it's cultural. Some cultures think of fish as meat, some do not. Meat processing industries (in some countries) regard meat exclusively as mammalean meat. So too does China, I believe, and we in the UK tend to separate meat, poultry and fish. Words mean what we want them to mean.

Yes, "vegetarian" dishes in China often have fish in them. You have to be clear that you don't eat meat AND fish else you might be in for a nasty surprise

I've never tried tofu from the UK - or indeed from anywhere else - but it seems to be sold in colourless (ie white) chunks ..

Well same could be said for chicken too .. that does not really taste of anything I don't know how people can eat just chicken without any sort of condiment or sauce or accompaniment.

Yes, I agree although foxes don't seem to mind. I always prefer to have sauce with chicken.

Foxes don't tend to even eat them - just kill them My nephew used to keep chickens and lost nearly all of them once to a fox. Bloody thing barely took a bite, just massacred them.

Like many things, I think chicken has a subtle taste, but people are so used to drowning things in other flavours they can't taste it any more.

Yeah. Chicken tastes like snake. Or, frog legs.
