This is an historical reference to a union of the nordic nations under a single crown. Its formation was in reaction to the power of the Hanseatic League, after Mecklenburg-influenced squabbling between Denmark and Sweden. It also entailed the creation of the Victual Brothers, who eventually became the vestigial Likedeelers, scourage of the North Sea....Aarrrrgh!...to harry Hansa interests on the seas. One of the things that the Victual Brothers did (presumably at the request of Queen Margaret of Denmark) was assault and raze the Hansa offices in Bergen, by burning the town to the ground. Trade wars, boycotts, and vicious competition, O, my!

Really? Despite Beowulf and Cnute, Danegeld and the Danelaw, and good old Yorvik?
I would think that the Nordic culture would be inextricably interwoven in the whole British epic. Saxons, Danes, and Norse and all.

Even despite all that. The Norse invasions / settlement of Britain was important. Where they came from and any history in those places - how could that possibly be of interest?

Yeah...I suppose. Like here. Who the hell cares anything about histories of the ancestors of the current residents? Their contributions don't mean shit any way...all that crap bout traditions and things like legal systems and all...it is pointless to understand that shit now that we're all Americans. Like that?

Well, if it is worth anything, I learnt about it. Some in school, some at home. In fact, my mother is a bit obsessed with it, to the point where I would tune out when she got to talking. Imagine how she felt when she found Birger Jarl in the family tree.
