Me? Well, I tried. I don't think I ever succeeded, but I tried. I'll bet I was trying along the way, too.
Somebody gave me a guitar that was too big and too heavy for me when I was a pre-adolescent. I tried, but gave up.
Somebody else loaned me their trumpet to trial. Too buzzy on my lips.
Finally, when push came to shove and I had to pick an instrument for band, I went with what my brother already played: the flute.
I spent the next seven to eight years attempting to convince myself that I could master the flute, and then, in high school, the piccolo.
I was mediocre, at best.
I lost interest my senior year, after I transferred to the experimental high school.
I later told myself, as an adult, that I was going to learn the recorder. And then I switched to the pennywhistle. I never mastered more than a toot.
Later in life, my dear wife had enough faith in me to buy me a cheap ukulele....but, by then, my rhythm had been exiled permanently. I didn't get far.
I'm a musical dud.

I've always been in love with music, although I don't have a real gift for it. I'm a trained singer --my first degree was in Music with a voice major. I've always loves choral conducting, but I haven't done any for many years now. At University, I played a number of instruments (none of them very well, except I liked trombone quite a bit). My only real skill in instrumental music is recorder. I play all recorders quite well, although stopped playing seriously when I lost much of my hearing.
Funnily enough, I don't really like to listen to music. Just to DO it!

I'm not very good at playing any instrument. I really tried hard on the piano, but it's not meant to be. I'm a fairly decent singer and since my memory and hearing are quite good, I do well in choirs. I would love to sing some of the less well-known chorals, but it's heard to find a choir going for that in the neighbourhoud.

I had a lot of music lessons as a kid as my parents wanted me to have things that they hadn't had the chance to. I learned piano, recorder and violin and had a flute and a tenor horn (that last on loan) though I did not have proper lessons in either of those. The only one I was any good at was the recorder, alas. I managed to get to a 'tolerable' level on the piano but I'd never have got any further than that.. not a natural gift of mine alas

I had some piano lessons. They were not incredibly successful.

I'd love to be able to master a stringed instrument but I was even worse on those than I was the piano. My sister plays the cello beautifully, though.

I thought a piano WAS a string instrument. It's just a bunch of strings in a box that are hammered by little mallets animated by depressing the keys.

My two sisters had piano lessons but I didn't because it wasn't the done thing to let boys learn to play. Nevertheless, I taught myself to play and could give a passable rendering of a Chopin waltz or two. But I haven't played for years.

I played guitar for about 30 years. I used to teach guitar and played in numerous bands. I found that talent, particularly at my age, a useless talent.

I got my first guitar at 15,by the age of 18 I finally realized I was slightly below average at best. I switched over to bass guitar and I realized quickly I had found my musical outlet. Couple of buddies and I were the house band at the local rednecks bar for a couple of years playing a mix of country music and pop hits of the early 70's. Money was pretty good to, $30 a night and all the beer we could drink. Kept playing through the years, kept all my equipment which is now vintage, and when I retire next year I'm going to be looking for a band.

I have tried to play guitar - and drums - before and absolutely could not master them. My ex was self taught on both and was actually pretty good, I think. I, on the other hand, who had proper music lessons - at least in some instruments - could not at all get the measure of them.

well thank you all, glad to be remembered. Yooper! I drove through the Upper Peninsula a year ago, and i wished I could have dropped in on you. Took us ages to find a place to eat that was open on a Sunday. I chickened out on driving over the Makinaw Bridge, and had my sister do it! My son now lives in Ann Arbor so I expect I will be in Michigan again at some point, although knowing I just cannot drive over that bridge will probably stop me from taking that route to get to the Saulte again. Loved reading all the historical stuff along the way though. As for music. I had Piano lessons as a kid, and I had a piano until 2 years ago. When I moved to my basement apartment the Piano had to go. My daughter in law is taking a Doctorate in Conducting at Ann Arbor University and plays several instruments, so she can make up for my lack of skill. Of course her favourite is the Baton....

TOURMSSSSSSSSSS Great to see yuou. That sounded in my mind's ear like a ghost greeting.... appropriate for All Hallow's Eve. When looking at your picture, I can actually see in my mind's eye the route we drove through the Upper Penninsula. And Since my son lives in Michigan now...and is an avid canoeist and outdoorsperson... is there any place that you would recommend in your State for the Wilderness Canoeist? (He is also a mountain biker)
