A new place in the neighborhood.... Outer Darkness Donuts. Hmmm.... "Hot li'l donuts, powerful dark coffee, mimosas forever." Intriguing. And a 'gift certificate' for a free cuppa joe. Of course, it's $9 for a 'flight' of 'hot li'l donuts'. The Homer Simpson in me cries out for release.

I like the name, despite it's location being far more 'inner' than I already am.
It is very 'over-the-top' in terms of trendiness. It's a 'creative' place.

Yeah...They're a bit...weird...for my tastes.
I'd rather have a half dozen plain cake donuts and a thermos of good coffee.
Timbits....that's what I'd prefer.

Is a cake donut, a donut with a yeast dough? That's the sort of donut I like. Preferrably with jam in it and icing sugar around it. Or just cinnamon and sugar.

Okay...I was not sure and had to check on it. No...Cake donuts are not yeast donuts. Yeast donuts are what we call 'raised donuts'. Cake donuts use baking powder as the rising element. I prefer the latter. Raised, left ....Cake, right

I'll have you know that whilst I was transiting south from Aberdeen, headed to Ayr, I was required to exit at one railway station in Glasgow and proceed, on foot, to the other railway station. As I approached the Queen Street Station, a queue formed on the pedestrian walk, which, since it was midday on a standard workday, rather congested the way. It was a long, long queue. It was maybe 600 to 800 feet long. I could not imagine what would generate such interest. Just before I had to tuck in to the rail station, I came to the queue's destination....a NEW Tim Horton's outlet. The first in the UK, I guess. Definitely the first in Glasgow. It was a huge hit. Now, those Glaswegians will get to know decent donuts and joe. And Timbits, too! They were lining up for it. Proof.And...Check out that tray of Timbits that lovely Glaswegian lass is brandishing. Yum.

I like donuts, but not the ones which are common in Germany which don't have a hole and jam in the middle - well, I like them too, but not as much as the American ones. But they are sweet, fatty and not that cheap (unless they come in a big package in Aldi where they don't really look that appealing), so we rarely have them.

Also, cake donuts seem fried in lard which I find gross. But yeast donuts are usually (not always) fried in vegetable oil. This is a specious claim. Here in the US, donuts are donuts. There is no distinction as to whether they were fried in lard, or in vegetable oil. The thing is, all donut outlets usually offer both 'raised' and 'cake' donuts. Do you think that nearly every donut shop in the US is going to maintain TWO hot fat vats, one with lard and one with veggy oil, just so they can provide both types of donuts? NFL. It is difficult enough to maintain one fry vat, much less two. Instead, every donut maker I know makes different batches of dough and then fries them in the same hot oil vat, whether it is lard or veggy oil. As a note, most makers have left lard behind and started using vegetable oil because it tends to be cheaper, easier to obtain, and still provides an adequate cooking medium. There are lard fanciers and they maintain that the flavor is far better....but, I've never been able to ascertain any real flavor difference. The different donuts are NOT fried in different oils. Both raised and cake donuts are cooked in either medium. I made a point of reading the entire wiki article on donuts and not once in the entire article did they even address the lard/veggy oil distinction. They didn't even address the need to maintain consistent oil temperature when cooking.

Granted, I don't remember the last time I ate a donut..
