I wanted to feed the gerbils tonight and suddenly saw a baby gerbil running through the cage. First, I really thought I was hallucinating and called Frank, but he saw it as well! We've seen only one so far, eyes still close. We'll need to find out tomorrow how many they are and who the male is.

What a surprise! I didn't know you had a mating pair. We didn't know either. They must have done family planning because they're over six months old already.

Found three more babies. Tomorrow, we will need to have a close look at the adults and try to find out who the males are. And find out how many babies there are.

So we seem to have two males and two females. We put the males in a separate cage. But it turns out we only have three really young gerbil babies and one slightly older one.

I bet you don't really know which are males and which are females.

With the adults I think we managed to find it out. With the babies, of course not, but it takes them about 60 to 70 days to get ready to make babies themselves.

You could start a gerbil store...

All the babies died last week. It was sad and I think Pinkie hasn't been a good mother.

That solves the problem of finding them homes.

I didn't want the problem to get solved in that way.

It was sad, actually. There might be more, though. We haven't looked, don't want to disturb them.

Did the older one also die? I'm sorry. Poor things.

Did the older one also die? I'm sorry. Poor things. Yes, it did. It seemed fine at first and then last week, in the evening, it suddenly looked very weak. i wanted to warm it, but then it was gone and I though the mum had taken it into the nest and thought I should let her do the job, but obviously she didn't.

We have 13 young gerbils now. The two "males" we thought we had found turned out to be a male and a female. We separated them and in the upper cage, there are six young gerbils now and in the lower cage, there are seven. They actually survived, it was Pinky's last litter.

I had gerbils when I was younger - but never breeding.
What is the likelihood of getting a photo of your enormous tribe of gerbils?

That is a lot of gerbils! What happens if you don't find homes for them? Can you keep them all?

We'd have to call the animal shelter. I don't think we can sex them and be certain of being right - we've been wrong before. We'd have to take them to an animal shelter because if they have babies as well, they will get sick and things will get out of control.
